Gluten Intolerant - Roanoke, Va

My husband is gluten intolerant (we don't think at this point that he's full blown Celiac...it's a long story). :) He also has other intolerances such as milk, citrus and vinegar. He's not handling this well and I'm wondering does anyone know of a Celiac chapter or a place we can go in Roanoke, Va to find help with where to eat, etc?

We've gotten creative with cooking at home (well sort of) but eating out is a real bear for us at this point. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I live in Blacksburg, VA and teach at Virginia Tech, so I go to Roanoke occasionally. In Roanoke, Nature's Outlet has a nice supply of gluten-free foods, as does the Co-op across from the Grandin Theatre (though I prefer Nature's Outlet). I've heard the Outback in Roanoke is pretty good with handling gluten-free food. However, I was severely glutened at the one in Christiansburg, so just be careful if you go to that one. There is a support group that meets on Tuesdays (I believe the third Tuesdays in a month) at the Montgomery Regional Hospital in Christiansburg, but I haven't been to a meeting. Sorry I don't have more info about eating out--I don't eat out at all since I was glutened at the Outback here, so I just go to health food stores and buy what I need and cook myself.

Hello! I am new to this board also, and a little new to the celiac diagnosis, (august 05), but I have one restuarant you could go to that I have personally been to that were ver y accomodating to my needs for gluten free food. Its Nicos on Cambell street downtown. They are a new italtian restaurant and they have a great chef that new exactly what gluten-free meant, even made some potaoes specially for me as one of my side items and they told me they can prepare almost anything htere gluten free. My advise would be to call ahead and make sure the chef is on duty and make sure they know what your needs are. But my experience there was great and they were really nice to me about it and didnt make me feel like an alien from outerspace or something like most people do when I ask the about gluten free so I hope that helps! I know it can be frustrating to feel like you can not even go out to eat , so if I find any more good places I will let you know on here and please do the same! I seem to have the best luck with places that have a chef! good luck to you!

I am here to help! I also live in Blacksburg and have a Celiac significant other and I am from Roanoke. There are many places to choose from in the area. If you are unsure about a place call first and alo make sure to order most of your meals without seasoning. Here are the following places we go and what we get that is Gluten-Free:

Blacksburg:

Poor Billy's: Sushi with no spicy sauce and no tempura. The chef's are also familar with Gluten-free so if you prefer a steak or chicken just let them know you need it gluten-free.

Bogen's

Mi Puerto: No seasoning...

Wendy's: The chilli is gluten-free as well as baked potatoes.

The Cellar: Spinach salad with grilled chicken with no seasoning and oil and vinegar.

Outback: Ask for the Gluten-free menu

Texas Steakhouse and Saloon: The wait staff is very helpful and familiar with gluten-free.

You can also get LOTS at Eat's.

Hope these help!

I was diagnosed with Celiac a year ago. I have found that quite a few places are helpful in preparing a gluten-free meal! Carrabas, Olive Garden, and Outback have specific gluten-free menus, you just have to ask for them. If your wait person does not understand "gluten-free", tell them you have a wheat allergy. Most of the time, their entrees can be prepared without sauces. I am finding more and more things available that are gluten-free. Wendy's will serve you a burger without the bun, and put whatever toppings you want on it. I've found this true also of Burger King, McDonalds and Hardees. Wendy's new BLT Cobb salad is gluten free, as is their Baja salad. The Apple-Pecan Chicken salad is okay except for the pecans, for some reason they have wheat on them, probably a preservative.

I hope this helps someone else!

You've done an excellent job of meticulously tracking the rash's unpredictable behavior, from its symmetrical spread and stubborn scabbing to the potential triggers you've identified, like the asthma medication and dietary changes. It's particularly telling that the rash seems to flare with wheat consumption, even though your initial blood test was negative—as you've noted, being off wheat before a test can sometimes lead to a false negative, and your description of the other symptoms—joint pain, brain fog, stomach issues—is very compelling. The symmetry of the rash is a crucial detail that often points toward an internal cause, such as an autoimmune response or a systemic reaction, rather than just an external irritant like a plant or mites. I hope your doctor tomorrow takes the time to listen carefully to all of this evidence you've gathered and works with you to find some real answers and effective relief. Don't be discouraged if the rash fluctuates; your detailed history is the most valuable tool you have for getting an accurate diagnosis.

In this case the beer is excellent, but for those who are super sensitive it is likely better to go the full gluten-free beer route. Lakefront Brewery (another sponsor!) has good gluten-free beer made without any gluten ingredients.

Welcome to the forum, @catsrlife! Celiac disease can be diagnosed without committing to a full-blown "gluten challenge" if you get a skin biopsy done during an active outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, assuming that is what is causing the rash. There is no other known cause for dermatitis herpetiformis so it is definitive for celiac disease. You would need to find a dermatologist who is familiar with doing the biopsy correctly, however. The samples need to be taken next to the pustules, not on them . . . a mistake many dermatologists make when biopsying for dermatitis herpetiformis.

You state in an earlier post that you don't have celiac disease. Here in this post you state you will "be doing another test". What will this test be looking for? What kind of celiac disease testing have you had done? If you have used a Entero Labs it sounds like you have had stool testing done for celiac disease which is not widely accepted as a valid celiac disease diagnostic testing method. Have you had blood antibody testing for celiac disease done and do you realize that for antibody testing to be valid you must have been eating generous amounts of gluten for a period of weeks/months?

No, I've not been diagnosed as celiac.  Despite Entero Labs being relocated to Switzerland/Greece, I'll be doing another test. After eating wheat products in Greece for 4 weeks, there wasn't any reaction.  However, avoiding it here in the states.   Thanks everyone for your responses.
