We will be travelling to South Africa in December. We have been there a couple of times, but this will be our first trip there since my 4 year old was dx'd.

Does anyone have any experience with finding gluten-free food in supermarkets or restaurants there, particularly in Cape Town and Johannesburg? I am not even sure if there are any health food stores there. I haven't been able to find out much via the internet.

Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

I know there are a few here in S Africa, so hopefully they will respond, but you can also ck with the groups below for local help:

The South African Coeliac Society advises contacting them before and after arrival in the country. They can provide a Food List as well as local information on restaurants, etc.

In some cities gluten-free food is not available. Take care in restaurants and hotels and always ask about ingredients - that they may not have anything with FLOUR, only CORN STARCH - MAIZENA. In Cape Town gluten-free confectionery and rice cakes are available from certain outlets. You are advised to take your own bread to tide you over the initial stage of your holiday.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
