Are You Dying For Milk But Can't Have Lactose Or Soy?

So now that I am both intollerant to soy and lactose I thought I would never be able to have "milk" in my tea or cereal again. Until I found almond milk. It was great, especially if you enjoy the taste of soy milk. The brand I bought is Pacific Natural Foods, Vanilla Almond Milk. Its low fat and cholesterol free too and we all know how great almonds are for you. So if you can eat nuts but can't have soy or lactose definitely try some of this. If you have a Trader Joes nearby that's where I found mine in the same isle as soy milk and rice milk (which i thought would be safe until it said very clearly on the label: contains gluten!!!)

What about lactose free cow's milk? Or are you casein intolerant as well?

You know, I never thought about that. Like the Lactaid milk right? I should try that too. Thanks!

I'm casein intolerant and don't use much milk ... so if I buy almond milk, it generally goes bad and I end up throwing some of it away. I use Vance's Dari-free -- it's powdered, soy, gluten, casein-free! Tastes good, too. Thanks for the suggestion.

I use pacific's almond milk too. the vanilla is good for cereal. the original is better for substituting in recipes. Also, there is a rice milk (not rice dream) that does not have gluten in it. It's made by "Nature's Promise," which is an organic/natural line of foods that Stop n Shop sells. Im not sure if it's "organic" or just "natural" but it's in the special/ethnic/international foods aisle at the supermarket. Anyway, it's pretty good, too. Oh, and the lactaid has a yucky aftertaste. I used to use it years ago and then i found soy milk...hope that helps.

I find that the lactaid milk tastes different, but if you really, really want to have cereal with milk then it would do the trick. I don't often, but when I do I usually just take Lactaid Ultra with it.

I really like Stop n Shop's Nature's Promise brand. I will have to check out their rice milk and thanks for the substition tip, I will definitly have to try that. I sure that aren't the most reliable brand for organi foods but some of their stuff is pretty good. I don't know if you like tuna but the Nature's Promise canned tuna in water is really good. I have been cautious about eating canned albacore tuna because of the mercury scare. the canned tuna made by Nature's Promise is actually yellow tail tuna which is supposed to better for you in terms of the mercury levels.

I'm also soy and dairy free, and I recently discovered Whole Food's 365 Vanilla Rice Milk, and it's gluten-free and very yummy, so there's another option if you have a Whole Foods near you.

"I'm wondering if she just hadn't eaten enough to test positive?" --> Because your daughter is "IGA deficient", the (gliadin IGA) test she was given could not work properly and the result of that particular test was meaningless. The amount of gluten she did/didn't eat would not matter for that part, whether or not she actually has celiac disease. If instead she had had normal levels of IGA in her blood, then the question of how much gluten she was eating would become relevant.

That sounds very hernia inducing work! You confirm what I have suspected, I get pain just to the right of the umbilical hernia, I am sure there is a connection.  If do see my gastroenterologist I'll mention it again.   I can't help thinking I've also got an issue in my groin, perhaps a hernia threatening, I guess an ultrasound would be needed to confirm it.

For the Inguinal hernia I could definitely feel it, and it came with an obvious bulge that appeared soon after doing a project where I was drilling holes on concrete using a very old school regular hand drill with mason bit, instead of a hammer drill with mason bit--this left me squatting over the drill putting my weight on it for several hours (the hammer drill would not have required this level of stress, nor the time it took). Bad idea--learn from my mistake in being "lazy" and not renting (or buying) the proper tool for the job. My umbilical hernia was around for many years, and I didn't feel that one at all, so never worried about it. My doctor basically recommended doing both in one surgery, which seemed like wise move.  As far as the possible IBS connection to either, it was definitely apparent after getting the Inguinal hernia, which is why I asked my doctor about that, but after getting both fixed I realize that the umbilical hernia likely also had mild IBS effects over the years.

@Scott Adams  Strange question but can you actually feel your hernia?  I have so many abdominal lumps and bumps of longstanding (my GP said it's fat!) that I sometimes wonder if an inguinal hernia could be missed.  I am quite sure some of my pain is from my umbilical hernia but that first came about courtesy of my second pregnancy.

Thanks for sharing this! I've always wanted to go to Ireland, and we did include Ireland in a recent top travel destinations article, so it's nice to know that we got that right:
