Wow, you typed that all out? Thanks for the work. Though I don't think they can claim to be gluten free when they have this little item.

*the above products do not contain gluten; however, they are produced on the same line as our products that do contain gluten. Althought the lines are washed between batches, a slight residue may remain on the lines. Individuals who are extremely sensitive may be affected.

So doesn't that mean these products might be safe, but may not, so it's a risk?

I'm still kinda new to avioding gluten, so I could be wrong. But wanted to ask about that.

angel-jd1 Community Regular

Any time you eat a processed food you are taking a risk pretty much. They are being upfront and warning you that there is a chance of cross-contamination. I personally haven't had trouble with them. I am pretty sensitive.

i think i lot of places stick a disclaimer in there just so they don't get sued or something. i eat ruffles without a problem except for the WOW but i don't know if that's the olean or whatever it's called or gluten, either way probably not good for people with stomach problems!

Alexolua Explorer

Okay, thanks you two. =)

Though making life harder for me, I need to aviod casien too.. and since they do make products with cheese, think that increases my risk there too. Figure that's on the same lines as well.

So guess for now, I'll stick to home made potato chips! lol

Thanks a lot Jessica :D

i was diagnosed with celiac disease a few weeks ago and was wondering, if the potato chips from Lay's contain gluten. So i read the label, because i didn't know and thought that only the Lay's classic potato chips were gluten free. I didn't know. Cool! Now i can eat more.

But can somebody help me with this problem? First i started to eat from a big bag of Lay's classic potato chips for a few days (everyday a few hands full). And i never had problems. Now two days ago my husband ate from the same bag. And after that i ate from this bag again and my stomache made strange noise. Could it be, that he ate something with gluten before, then he ate from this chips and whatever he ate before was sticking to the chips now? Well, i don't know. Could anybody help me with that?

Try asking him?

If he had just ate or grabbed something else that would get gluten on his hands, and then put his hand in the bag of chips, then I think that could contaminate the bag.

Least that makes sense to me.

He could have contaminated it but I'll have top tell you that I see more complaints about contaminated Lay's products than with most companies. You'll get one bag that's OK and another that isn't. In Lay's case, I don't think their warning is just CYA. As is the case with cereal, the nature of the product makes it harder to clean lines completely.

I buy the UTZ individual bags, that way I don't have to worry about him eating his sandwich and reaching in the potato chip bag! UTZ has a whole page on their website dedicated to Celiac disease and I've never had any problem with their chips. Another one that is good is Cape Cod. They will appear on almost all the gluten-free lists. :)

doritos are not gluten free the package says WHEAT FLOUR!!

tarnalberry Community Regular

Joemoe's post - and other posts that have noted the same thing in the past - made me curious to investigate this. The fact is, Frito-Lay specifically lists virtually, if not all, of their Doritos flavors and being gluten-free. And I've never seen wheat flour on the label of a bag of Doritos (though, the only time I look is if I'm at the store and this sort of thread pops up in my mind ;-) ). So where are the claims of wheat flour in the ingredients coming from?

One possibility is Walkers Crisps... they make a corn chip also called Doritos, and their Tangy Cheese flavor specifically lists wheat flour as an ingredient. (Open Original Shared Link

I wonder if this is a country specific thing?

Only the Nacho cheese flavored Doritos(in the red bag) contain wheat flour. Hope that clears it up.

but the cooler ranch ones are gluten-free

for what it's worth, i don't consider myself to be too sensitive to gluten yet i have definitely gotten sick off of gluten-free lays chips, it took me a long time to make the connection but i'm pretty positive that's what it was a bunch of times. so even though it's labled gluten free this is one of the few commercial products i avoid now because of cross contamination issues

and walker crisps i've only seen in europe, i'm not sure if they are available in the states

I am, unfortunately, sensitive ~ Lays products make me VERY sick. I would love it if they were gluten-free and free from contamination ~ I LOVE their puffy cheese curls!!! ~ but the fact is that they must get cross contamination. Sorry!!!

lovegrov Collaborator

Lay's does indeed seem to have a problem with contamination of some products. Recently I read, however, that Lay's says the regular potato chips, Ruffles, Fritos and the Stax chips are made on dedicated lines. Obviously I cannot guarantee there's no contamination even in them, but thought I would pass this along.

I've heard that too! Hope they're right!

If you like cheese puffs, Pirate's Booty is a great alternative. They are gluten-free and I've been eating them with great enjoyment. I believe their Fruity Booty and Veggie Booty are also gluten-free.

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗
