a friend sent me a reportedly yummy pie crust mix, but i need to roll it in tapioca starch. i've looked in health food stores--and in the mainstream ones, too--and i can't find it.

any ideas?--is online my only option, or is there a suitable substitute?

Do you have a Whole Foods or a Wegman's grocery store near by? Those are the places I've seen it.

I would think that you could also use potato starch to roll out the dough.

Its actually sometimes called Tapioca flour. I am sure its at your natural food store and it is even at my local grocery store in Colorado Springs. Energ makes it and it in a box. Bob's Red mill makes it too in their line that a lot of grocery stores now carry. Theirs comes in a little see through bag like their gluten-free bread mix etc. You can order it from them directly on line too, but then you pay shipping. Open Original Shared Link

I found tapioca starch in the asian section of the grocery store... and it's much cheaper than the health food store.

You can mail order it from Bob's Red Mill or Ener-g foods, or even Amazon. They now have a terrific selection of gluten free stuff in their "grocery" section and the best part is that if you spend over a certain amount, shipping is free. Yay!

As people mentioned, Chinese or Japanese markets will sell tapioca starch as well. It's called katakuriko in Japanese. However, prices will probably be lower at a Chinese market- at least that's how it is in my area.

Just to add on to this...

Are tapioca starch and tapioca flour the same thing?

How about potato starch?

I'm curious...

In some of my recipes, I have substituted corn starch for potato starch, but I have never substituted tapioca flour for potato starch.

Just a little confused. Thanks! -Julie :)

Tapioca flour and tapioca starch are the same thing, and they are FAR cheaper at Asian grocery stores! 89 Cents a pound at the Asian groceries in Pittsburgh, but about 3 dollars a pound at the regular grocery store.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
