Hi, I'm Kaya's mum. Here in New Zealand , on the Coeliac Society web site, we have access to the Food Database which includes amongst others the gluten free foods list. This is submitted by manufacturers to the dietitian responsible at Auckland Hospital and verified before it goes on the list. We are given a copy if we belong to the Coeliac society and it's updated annually.

Many of the same foods would be available to you ( in Aussie ) like confectionery. Cadbury has quite an extensive list Perhaps it would be worth checking out.

I have found the yummiest Chocolate on planet!

Tropical Source, is amazing. They are seem asociated with Eskal.

It is a bit expensive, but so good, and they're are diff types as well, I am currently munching on mint choc chip.

I got it from the Darrel Lea shop but have also seen it in a health food shop.

It says that it is made in a dedicated facility and the one that I have is dairy free also ( I would assume this is the same for all but please check.)

LolI swear it so yummy , you will want to hide from the gluten eaters in your house coz they'll want to nic it!

Thanks for this chocky sweets thread. I have got ill with what feels like tonsillitis ( tonsils removed but feels like that) and in my feverish state could only remember you saying that Flake & Twirl were OK. I was collapsing with hunger and can't swallow - so that bit of choc and Sweets icecream and fresh orange juice has saved me.I always get sick on weekends :(

Hello fellow Aussies,

I'm pleased to let you know about a couple of lollies we Aussie Coeliacs can indulge in - Minties and Fruit Tingles! :)

Fruit Tingles were always my favourite lollies, before I was diagnosed. I was so glad when I read a product/ingredient list that I can still eat them. Also, we can have Jila mints, which have glucose syrup in them, but that's OK.

Another treat I just had today (not a lolly, but dessert) is Weiss Lemon Sorbet. It's just like traditional lemon gelati and very yummy. You can buy it at most supermarkets in the ice cream cabinet.

Whoo, I I thought minties would have something bad in them so I was avoiding them, I'm going away this week, so I think I will have to get myself some.

Can anyone tell me where I can find a list of Nestle bars we can eat or If you know wich ones we can have, post them here please.

Also does anyone know of any mint/ choc mint ice cream we can have, that is available from supermarkets.

Weiss Lemon Sorbet does contain glucose syrup from wheat but as someone else mentioned in this thread, the Coeliac Society of Australia has confirmed that this is safe for us to eat (the wheat is so refined to create a sugar that no gluten remains in the glucose syryp).

Hi everyone,

I am not a coeliac but my 10 year old daughter is so my knowledge of gluten free chocolates and lollies is pretty good as you can imagine.

You can definately eat chocolates and lollies with glucose syrup and caramel for those that don't know. Even if it states that glucose syprup and caramel is from wheat it is still safe too eat as is Dextrose.

Apparently Target do a party mix that is fine.

Chuppa Chups (except for cola flavour)

Jelly Bellys

Heaps of chocolates are fine - just read the ingredients for wheat products.

The Natural confectionary company do 1 or two that are okay - Fruit Salad jubes I think.

I would suggest contacting various companies such as Nestle, Cadbury etc. and asking them to send you out an updated list of gluten free products.

      Hey there, have you been tested for allergies? You may not only have celiac disease but be allergic. I have celiac disease and am allergic to Barley, wheat and rye.

      I have osteopenia and have cracked three vertebrae.  Niacin is connected to osteoporosis!       Thank you so much for the clarification! Yes to these questions: Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, or vitamins? I’m within healthy range for nutritional tests, thyroid and am not anemic. I do have osteopenia. I don’t take any medications, and the dietician was actually a nutritionist (not sure if that is the same thing) recommended by my physician at the time to better understand gluten free eating.    I almost wish the gluten exposure had triggered something, so at least I’d know what’s going on. So confusing!    Many thanks!

      @JudyLou,  I have dermatitis herpetiformis, too!  And...big drum roll... Niacin improves dermatitis herpetiformis!   Niacin is very important to skin health and intestinal health.   You're correct.  dermatitis herpetiformis usually occurs on extensor muscles, but dermatitis herpetiformis is also pressure sensitive, so blisters can form where clothing puts pressure on the skin. Elastic waist bands, bulky seams on clothing, watch bands, hats.  Rolled up sleeves or my purse hanging on my arm would make me break out on the insides of my elbows.  I have had a blister on my finger where my pen rested as I write.  Foods high in Iodine can cause an outbreak and exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. You've been on the gluten free diet for a long time.  Our gluten free diet can be low in vitamins and minerals, especially if processed gluten free foods are consumed.  Those aren't fortified with vitamins like gluten containing products are.  Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, medicine, or vitamins? Niacin deficiency is connected to anemia.  Anemia can cause false negatives on tTg IgA tests.  A person can be on that borderline where symptoms wax and wane for years, surviving, but not thriving.  We have a higher metabolic need for more nutrients when we're sick or emotionally stressed which can deplete the small amount of vitamins we can store in our bodies and symptoms reappear.   Exposure to gluten (and casein in those sensitive to it) can cause an increased immune response and inflammation for months afterwards. The immune cells that make tTg IgA antibodies which are triggered today are going to live for about two years. During that time, inflammation is heightened.  Those immune cells only replicate when triggered.  If those immune cells don't get triggered again for about two years, they die without leaving any descendents programmed to trigger on gluten and casein.  The immune system forgets gluten and casein need to be attacked.  The Celiac genes turn off.  This is remission.    Some people in remission report being able to consume gluten again without consequence.   However, another triggering event can turn the Celiac genes on again.   Celiac genes are turned on by a triggering event (physical or emotional stress).  There's some evidence that thiamine insufficiency contributes to the turning on of autoimmune genes.  There is an increased biological need for thiamine when we are physically or emotionally stressed.  Thiamine cannot be stored for more than twenty-one days and may be depleted in as little as three during physical and emotional stresses. Mitochondria without sufficient thiamine become damaged and don't function properly.  This gets relayed to the genes and autoimmune disease genes turn on.  Thiamine and other B vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are needed to replace the dysfunctional mitochondria and repair the damage to the body.   I recommend getting checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  More than just Vitamin D and B12.  A gluten challenge would definitely be a stressor capable of precipitating further vitamin deficiencies and health consequences.   Best wishes!
