JB Dawsons is a restaurant w/ 4 locations in Southeast PA:

Plymouth Meeting, PA.

Langhorne, PA

Drexel Hill, PA.

Austin's Restaurant & Bar in West Lawn (Reading), PA.

I was there tonight trying to explain my restrictions, and the server told me they have a gluten free menu. He said it was new - I'm not sure, but I ate BBQ chicken, great baked beans, and shoe string fries (in a dedicated fryer!). All went well, and it was yummy.

The gluten-free menu options were pretty extensive, if you're in the area check it out.

What kind of restaurant is this? Is it nicer or is it more family style?

I'd say it's an upscale TGIF. They have items for kids (chicken fingers, etc.) and server items ranging from large portioned salads to steak. The location in Langhorne is cozy - brick interior, darker lighting, but they have booth seating and a casual atmosphere.

It's pretty good. Don't know how I typed "se" in the subject line here - it's supposed to say "in". Duh!

I was very happy with the service, once the wait staff and I were on the same page. They do operate on a "team" service system - so the one bringing your dish may not be the one you ordered with. I just clarified by making sure they had brought me the gluten-free dish at the table.

Could be a nice "date" location - and a nice evening out with the kids. The night I was there, there was a young child in a highchair at the next table - but it's not a loud, kids everywhere kind of place.

They are also open for lunch.

This is great!!! So exciting. I live right near the one on Plymouth Meeting. Just called and they said they have a gluten free menu. I think I might go there tonight for dinner. Thank you Thank you Thank you. So nice to have another place to eat!!! :D You just made my day!

      Let me hasten to add that if you will be undergoing an endoscopy/biopsy, it is critical that you do not begin efforts to reduce gluten beforehand. Doing so will render the results invalid as it will allow the small bowel lining to heal and, therefore, obscure the damage done by celiac disease which is what the biopsy is looking for.

      That’s a really tough situation. A few key points: as mentioned, a gluten challenge does require daily gluten for several weeks to make blood tests meaningful, but negative tests after limited exposure aren’t reliable. Dermatitis herpetiformis can also be tricky to diagnose unless the biopsy is taken from normal-looking skin next to a lesion. Some people with celiac or DH don’t react every time they’re exposed, so lack of symptoms doesn’t rule it out. Given your history and family cancer risk, this is something I’d strongly discuss with a celiac-experienced gastroenterologist or dermatologist before attempting a challenge on your own, so risks and benefits are clearly weighed.

      Concerning the EMA positive result, the EMA was the original blood test developed to detect celiac disease and has largely been replaced by the tTG-IGA which has a similar reliability confidence but is much less expensive to run. Yes, a positive EMA is very strong evidence of celiac disease but not foolproof. In the UK, a tTG-IGA score that is 10x normal or greater will often result in foregoing the endoscopy/biopsy. Weaker positives on the tTG-IGA still trigger the endoscopy/biopsy. That protocol is being considered in the US but is not yet in place.
