gluten-free In Egypt?

I'm going to spend a week teaching in Egypt (Cairo) next january.

I've been gluten-free for 6 months now, but still undergoing a lot of crisis and pain even though I'm very careful with everything I eat.

I'm starting to worry about what I'll be able to eat in Egypt (+ afraid of the language problem).

Have you been there? How did you manage?

Thanks!

It is unlikely that their staple is one of the gluten grains (that is a mostly European and American thing). Stick with basic foods (vegetables, fruits, meat) and rice and don't even bother with trying to find any specialty items. One weeks is such a short time that you can even bring enough snacks with you. You should be fine.

Thanks for your help! I hope I'll be fine! :)

I asked my son who has lived in Cairo about this. He said that if you are staying at a nice hotel you should not have any trouble getting American food. But if not, stick to rice and beans.

He's not gluten free, but he knows what it entails.

Good luck .. Sounds like fun ... Marcia ...

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
