Today I didn't have much to do so I thought of a few brand names and shot out e-mails for gluten-free products. I'll list the companies I contacted below. I already got one reply, from Tootsie (makers of Tootsie products, charm products, cambridge brands, and cella confections). They sent me their list in word document format....if anyone wants their list or any others I get, ask me and I'll forward the e-mail......or post the list here.....

Speaking of ice cream... my fiance' works for Bruster's (lucky me!) and got an e-mail from a woman inquiring about the gluten-free status last week. That was pretty cool, actually! But, the bad news is that there is too high a risk for cross-contamination for it to be considered gluten-free. At least that's what he told me. I could imagine that any place that you visit that scoops ice cream onto cones will inevitiably get cone fragments, etc into the bucket that they're scooping from. I believe their ice-cream itself is gluten-free, but the environment is too risky.

Hi - This is my first reply - just joined and am at the start of my huge learning curve! I would just LOVE to receive the lists you're getting! I'm trying to combine the need to be gluten-free with Atkins as much as I can, so am trying to stay away from such goodies as Tootsie Rolls - one of my favorites!!!

I'm really glad I found this forum - and hope I'll someday be able to be as helpful as you all seem to be!

Along with the gluten-free list of products on this forum (which is a great list), there is also another forum at www.delphiforums.com. On the left, click on "Health and Wellness" and then the second forum down is the Celiac forum.... In there is a great gluten free list also.....

Just post away when you need to, there are a great bunch of people here who are always willing to help out.....

I can tell you that you won't get a list from Kraft. They'll just tell you to read the ingredients because they don't hide gluten. In fact, most of the companies you wrote to have the same policy.

Oh, and like Hormel, Heinz's list is on their web site.

I was afraid of getting that reaction from Kraft...........I explained in my e-mail that I was aware of that policy............too bad. As for Heinz and Hormel, I didn't bother to check the FAQs; I just had one e-mail that I copied into every e-mail form and sent off -- it was faster that way. Thanks for the info., though

  We do not have a list of gluten-free flavors. Sorry! The ingredients that we use change quite often. We do not want to claim a flavor is gluten-free, then have that list become outdated and the recipients not aware of the latest changes.

I got another reply, this one from Dannon. I think it's funny that they mention celiac.com. Anyway, it's pretty much just the plain ones, though for any dieting celiacs, the lowfat and nonfat are gluten-free.......often, lowfat and nonfat products contain gluten, so that's good news.......although I'm trying to gain weight.

Two comments:

Product formulations are different in other countries, so be careful if you are not in the US. (Karen, I know you are aware of this from delphi but thought I'd mention it for others.)

Publix brand sherbets and yogurts are gluten-free - confirmed recently.

celiac3270, It sounds like you have learned that you are not lactose intolerant. If you don't know for sure, it would seem better to avoid ice cream altogether, especially since you are still having problems. I really shouldn't be giving advice about milk products since I had company last week and made them a traditional family treat, strawberry shortcake (biscuit from regular flour) and topped with whipping cream, 1 pt. between 6 people. I ate my share and after being gluten free for just 3 weeks had several other glaring departures from my diet. The first days of this week my burning abdomen was much worse and also my arthritis. Today I am feeling a bit better. At least I learned that I do feel some better in general when I am on the diet. Of course, I still have not been on very long. Will see my doctor on Monday. He wants to monitor my progress. Too bad I slipped. He also wants to be sure I don't lose too much weight. I gained a little with the company, but have already lost that. Have trouble getting enough calories to replace the bread and pasta stuff I was eating. I really am not into baking alot so haven't bought any gluten-free baking ingredients. I am on the strict SCD diet set forth in "Breaking the Vicious Cycle". This is not as hard for me as it would be for you since I really don't need to gain weight, just try to hold steady. Also I have been in the habit of eating mostly meat and vegetables, a few fruits for some time except for bread and desserts at Ladies' Guild. I did manage not to eat cake at Guild this time. Back to baking ingredients, the gluten-free nutflours, etc. seem very expensive. I think you mentioned this, too, awhile back. If you run into any good lists for this sort of thing I'd be interested. I simply e-mailed all these companies cause I had a lot of time on my hands with a computer and nothing else to do :D . I tried to think of a lot of companies that I could e-mail. I do not eat Ben and Jerry's ice cream, although I have had Haagen Dazs. The doctor is focusing on a few things that he thinks could be causing my problems. Actually, I should probably be a little more strict or observant with dairy consumption and symptoms.

Actually, I've heard a bit more from my doctor, so I'll fill everybody in. Okay, first off, as you all know by now, I've still been having symptom troubles.....and my GI was terrific in diagnosing, but utterly useless with the post-diagnosis stage of celiac. So I recently switched doctors to a celiac specialist. He has been great. Now, these were a few possibilities:

- Cyclic Vomiting: a migraine-related thing that manifests itself in vomiting--I'm not sure about the abdominal pains. One thing that makes him think that is that my pediatrician thought I had that when I had stomach troubles...he might have been right...additionally, I used to; not so much anymore, see spots, kinda, when I was sick -- as sign of cyclic. Anyway, if this is the case, there's nothing to do about it, but wait. You're supposed to outgrow it and if I had it, I should be outgrowing it already.

- Gallbladder: Karen mentioned the possiblity of something with my gallbladder. I mentioned that to him and he said that that would be quite a possibility. Then he asked if I had had a sonogram, which I had, and therefore, he said, it would've already been found.

- Ulcers: Just something I saw written all over, so I brought that up. He said that that is a possibility.....I don't know how you test that or how you treat it, so if someone could fill me in on that, it would be appreciated.

.........I don't remember everything, but I guess I just haven't been paying attention to the dairy since my focus is on acid and sugar. I think cutting out the ACID has helped tremendously....I just feel better than I did...I don't know if this is just in my head. BTW, I am to continue taking Prilosec OTC twice a day. That about brings us up to date :) . If my symptoms don't get better after....maybe a year, perhaps sooner, I think I'll start an elimination diet.....start off with veggies, meats, potato.....see how it goes.....then slowly incorporate a few items each week and if it gets bad, target individual items..............at this point I don't want to limit myself more than I have to.....if I lose my patience I'll try that.

Well, celiac3270, I'll help you out a little here. I emailed Carvel today, asking specifically which of their flavors are gluten-free and if you can special order their cakes w/o the chocolate "crunchies" in the center as those contain wheat. Here's what they said:

Thank you for your email. Most of our ice cream is gluten-free, except for those that contain brownie or cookie dough. You can only special order a cake through one of Carvel retail stores. Oooh........i got e-mails from General Mills, Yoplait, and.........some other places........can't remember who........yesterday. I got the same thing from General Mills, but I wasn't asking about a specific product or type of product. Can't remember the other replies.........just remember that Yoplait has no list..... <_< I'll check when I get home

General Mills doesn't hide gluten. All Yoplait flavors are gluten-free, but they do have some that comes with a separate package of granola. Don't use the granola.

oooh.......really Richard? I read in some sample of Clan Thompson's that the custard-style was gluten-free.........i didn't see anything else, but it never said that other flavors weren't gluten-free........thanks.

I couldn't contact the entire company Mars via e-mail, but rather, just Milkyway or M&Ms separately on their respective sites. M&Ms are gluten-free (peanut, regular, etc.), except for the crispy kind (blue packaging). Milkyways are not gluten-free except for the Milky Way midnight. I don't have the official lists w/ me......I'm not posting from home and aol.com doesn't always let me into my mailbox due to # of messages..............annoying. Anyway, when I get home, I'll post it.

Hi again. celiac3270, if you ever do go on an elimination diet, perhaps consider eliminating potatoes and tomato family also. Peppers and eggplant are also in that family. Those are things that definitely give me problems, but they may not bother you since all our systems are different. Like snowflakes, each person is different. Just thought I'd mention that possibility. Know that would be hard to do. I miss them very much, but as I've said in a different post, I am using the Elaine Gott(?) SCD diet. Intend to follow through even if I get company again since this past week has been rough. I think it is starting to come around again. Ruth

      I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.

      Hi,  I care for my seven year old daughter with Celiac. After watching her for months, I have figured out that she has problem with two kinds of fats- animal fat and cooking oils. It basically makes her intestine sore enough that she feels spasms when she is upset. It only happens on days when she has eaten more fat than her usual every day diet. (Her usual diet has chia seeds, flaxseeds, and avocado/ pumpkin seeds for fat and an occasional chicken breast.) I stopped using cooking oils last year, and when I reintroduced eggs and dairy, both of which I had held off for a few months thinking it was an issue of the protein like some Celiac patients habe mentioned to be the case, she has reacted in the same fashion as she does with excess fats. So now I wonder if her reaction to dairy and eggs is not really because of protein but fat.   I don't really have a question, just wondering if anyone finds this familiar and if it gets better with time.  Thank you.

      Hello, My name is Chanda and you are not the only one that gose through the same things. I have found that what's easiest for me is finding a few meals each week that last. I have such severe reactions to gluten that it shuts my entire body down. I struggle everyday with i can't eat enough it feels like, when I eat more I lose more weight. Make sure that you look at medication, vitamins and shampoo and conditioner also. They have different things that are less expensive at Walmart.

      Thank you so much! I saw some tips around the forum to make a food diary and now that I know that the community also struggles with corn, egg and soy, the puzzle pieces came together! Just yesterday I tried eating eggs and yes, he’s guilty and charged. Those there are my 3 combo nausea troublemakers. I’m going to adjust my diet ☺️ Also thank you for the information about MCAS! I’m from South America and little it’s talked about it in here. It’s honestly such a game changer now for treatment and recovery. I know I’m free from SIBO and Candida since I’ve been tested for it, but I’m still going to make a endoscopy to test for H. Pylori and Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Thank you again!!       Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.
