Passover Is In 3 Weeks

The stores already are selling Passover products and for those who don't know - most of what is sold has no wheat, corn or rice. As I mentioned once before, Manishewitz has a complete line of Gluten Free products and on their site there is a complete list.

BUT - you need to be careful - if it has Matzoh Meal or Cake Meal that is from wheat.

Almost all Macaroons and Candy are Gluten Free and even Gefilte Fish is now available Gluten Free and Egg-Free (It's an acquired taste but I bought 2 different brands last year and they weren't bad).

In the kosher stores in Brooklyn, NY the last 2 years they also had Gluten Free cookies and Crackers Kosher for Passover.

WHERE did you find gluten-free gefilte fish??????!! What brand is it? (And does it taste any good?) I miss gefilte fish so much!

I just stocked up on Manischevitz Kosher-for-Passover gluten-free egg noodles!!! But as cycler said, read the labels! A lot of stores put out a lot of Manischevitz products around Passover, assuming if it says Manischevitz, then all the Jews will buy it, when in fact, only the officially Kosher-for-Passover stuff has any chance at all of being gluten-free.

Incidentally, if you don't have an Asian store near you, this is your chance to stock up on potato starch!

I bought it in Pathmark but it was also available in Brooklyn. I don't remember the brand but there were two of the major ones - Rokeach or Manishewitz and each had two varieties (one was "Gourmet"). I feel so dumb because last year was the second year I bought it and BOTH TIMES I forgot to write down the name of which one was the best!

They really aren't bad - not like Grandma's of course (my grandmother did her own from scratch) but definitely edible. They add a lot of peppper to compensate so they are pretty spicy. I also wasn't able to get horseradish before because of my concern about vinegar but now I think it will be ok so if you add the horseradish it probably will taste even better.

cycler, which brand of gefilte fish is egg-free?

don't know if I've ever heard anyone saying they miss gefilte fish that much... but I'm only half-jewish so maybe that's why I don't quite share your affinity for it ;) ... as for a brand that is gluten-free, I think one brand is Rokeach... I was eating some last year after going gluten-free but stopped because I think it had egg in it... it tastes pretty good as far as gefilte fish goes, didn't seem any different than other gefilte fish I had before so I'd expect that you would like it

I just remembered - Kedem is Gluten Free and Egg Free and has 2 varieties but there is also another brand which is both also.

Has anyone tried the gluten free oat matzos from England? I ordered a box, and they are breathtakingly expensive, but I figured they are worth it because I won't be morbidly depressed missing my Hillel sandwich on Pesach! In fact, my last ''gluteny'' meal was Passover of last year, sniff!

Another annoying thing about trying to figure this Celiac life out is reading all of the labels and considering every choice. I shop at Aldi every week and have been for years. I was just officially diagnosed Celiac a couple weeks ago this October after my endoscopy. I've been encouraged by my local Aldi in that they have a lot of gluten free products and clearly labeled foods. I usually buy Milagro corn tortillas because they are cheap and are certified. However, I bought a package of Aldi's Pueblo Lindo Yellow Corn Tortillas without looking too closely (I was assuming they were fine... assuming never gets us anywhere good lol) it doesn't list any wheat products and doesn't say it was processed in a facility with wheat. It has a label that it's lactose free (hello, what?? When has dairy ever been in a tortilla?) Just, ugh. If they can add that label then why can't they just say something is gluten free or not? I did eat some of the tortillas and didn't notice any symptoms but I'm just not sure if it's safe. So I'll probably have to let my family eat them and stick with Milagro. There is way too much uncertainty with this but I guess you just have to stick with the clearly labeled products? I am still learning!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better

@Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."

As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.
