Iron Pills Post Dx

Okay - so my one year anniversary of being gluten-free was at the end of January. My six month blood work was surprisingly great and the year check up was even better. My vitamin levels were way up (B's, folic acid, etc) but my iron stores is only at 50 so the doc said I had to stay on the iron therapy. My iron level was high (not dangerous) but she said the stores or ferritin take a very long time to build back up. Just wondering if anyone else has been where I am and was eventually able to stop taking iron. How long on average does it take to build store back up to high levels? For the first 9 months on iron I didn't know I had Celiac so I wasn't absorbing much of it. I went from a 4 to a 10 for my stores (dangerous) eating gluten. So now it's 50 in a year off gluten, but I think it might have to get to 100 to stop the pills. What have others been told? Seems each doc has a different number they think is the goal. Thanks if anyone can help.

Perhaps you can try other, natural suppliments. What about natural foods high in iron and vitamins? Personally, my family takes a daily dose of Chlorella and spirulina. Even if you do not chose to give up your iron pills, the chlorella and spirulina will be a wonderful, natural laxative. When I discovered the two, I was surprised at the laxative effect. Pregnant women should be given these two over chemical pills. You should remove caffeine from your diet as well as dairy. Your absorption is compromised with those two in your body. Eat less meat. Perhaps even less than you think is normal for less. Eat more vegetables. More than you think is necessary. You will be eating cleaner food and maximize your absorption.

It could well be a new intolerance developing.  Does your diet incorporate pure oats i.e. those safe for coeliac consumption?  I find I can only tolerate a certain amount, same goes for dairy in fact, then I start to get gastric symptoms.   Or have you started consuming a new type of gluten-free bread, or more gluten-free bread than normal, that might contain oats?  I remember reading a post on this forum from a woman who had started to eat a lot of loaves made with oat flour and her coeliac symptoms kicked off again.  I am sure you know this, but some coeliacs cannot tolerate pure oats.

I eat a lot of dairy but its intermittent is this burning so I would assume it would happen all the time. Plus I have been tested for lactose intolerance  etc and I am fine and the other symptoms of that I don't get. As a aside  my dad died last month after a long illness so I wonder if the stress of that might be a influence as a bodily reaction to stress.

You should be fine.  You may start feeling better within a few days.  Someone who is very low in thiamine may notice improvement within hours.   Did you get the NeuroMag  or another magnesium supplement?

Yes Bobs redmill cgf oatmeal I started when I became gluten-free. So taking all 3 with breakfast should work? Will I notice any reactions getting used to these or should I be fine. Thanks
