Yes, I've done two saliva tests, one for adrenals/hormones and one for thyroid. The thyroid came out normal, but the adrenals/hormones were way out of kilter. I'm also battling candida, so you've got company. I think many here are battling candida at the moment...some of us talk about that on the OMG (800+ page) thread, lol.

ok ill have to check out that thread...did you cut sugar out of your diet for the candida?

dlp252 Apprentice

Oh yes! I basically eat just beef, turkey, eggs, broccoli, green beans and brussels sprouts, and a little tomatoe. I also have a lot of food intolerances, so that's why I'm so limited in what I'm eating now.

I don't eat any sugar, not even good carbohydrates (most of which I am intolerant to anyway), until this is under control. The only sweetener I use is a liquid Stevia, so not even any artificial sugars like Splenda, because most of them have maltodextrin, and regardless of the source it's still bad for me now, and I can almost feel it if I use it.

I DO eat a tiny bite of a nutrition bar here and there. I purchased one from my doctor which has some really good ingredients, then I divide that up into 8 pieces, and eat only 1 or two pieces of that a day. I shouldn't even do that, but sometimes I just want to taste something sweet.

Oh, and don't try to read from the beginning, lol...just jump in and ask a question...I think on the second to last page, I posted a couple of links to candida diet sites...I'll repost them here too. One of the posters on the thread (NoGluGirl) has actually written a paper on candida, so probably has some good research stuff.

Here are a couple of links for candida diets:

I did the saliva test and my cortisol numbers were fine.

I'm on so many antibiotics for Lyme Disease that I have to avoid sugar and alcohol, and take lots of probiotics. VSL#3 is GREAT for candida overgrowth; you can buy it off the internet. I also take Therelac (not Threelac) and Ultra Flora.

A few years ago I did have a candida problem, and like Donna, I avoided carbs. I basically did the Atkins diet, with as many veggies as I wanted. I had to eat some carbs a couple times per week or I got nauseous. I do not avoid carbs now, but try to focus more on proteins and veggies. (By carbs, I'm referring to starchy carbs).

Another thing for candida overgrowth is to take something to kill the candida (the probiotics don't kill it, and the "no sugar" just starves it). Garlic is good for that. Also, use coconut oil, it has caprylic acid, which kills candida. I use it for everything.

I once had candida overgrowth of the intestines and elevated cortisol (enough to get tested for cushings syndrome, but the docs decided it wasn't elevated enough for that). I never made the connection between the two at the time, but maybe there was - anyway thats back to normal now.

candida was self diagnosed, docs don't recognise it and I couldn't be bothered to pay for outside lab tests and because my symptoms went when I treated it, i'm fairly sure thats what it was.

initially I took a very poweful herb mixture containing amongst other things wormwood, this made my alternating constipation and D go away, but shortly after stopping the one month course it all came back again. This happened twice, so for me a one off cure treatment is no good instead I need daily maintenance. what keeps me happy is a daily intake of the following 3 things:

1. a gentler herb mixture called "intestinal cleanse #1", i've been taking just one capsule of this for years with no dependency (ie no need for increasing amounts)

2. strong pro-biotics

3. A fibre digesting enzyme called "no phenol", apparently this can eat the yeast plant Open Original Shared Link

I eat lots of carbs everyday - rice, sometimes gatorade if I'm active, some chocolate.

Products 1. and 2. above seemed to get my colon motility under control. When I introduced 3. (i sprinkle the powdered form on food) I finally got rid of the white coating on my tongue. This works for me, the drawback is that I can't stop this daily intake, but I don't mind, taking these 3 things is not so bad.

Yes, I've hard of Pao d'arco, but actually haven't found it yet. I've heard that recommended a lot. Also coconut oil is supposed to be very good.

Is the hemp for the candida or is that just for some protein? Did your NP recommend that? I've seen it at Whole Foods and was curious but don't know much about it.

i got tea at whole foods made by "traditional medicinals" brand of tea- i have a feeling its going to taste bad- that is for the candida. the hemp proteient was also recommended by the np for the adrenal fatigute i think- i do nt get a lot of protient- dont eat meat or fish. ill let you know what its like- im supposed to make a drinkof it with frozen fruit... im also taking a probiotic.

Protein is necessary for adrenal issues. Do you consume dairy? Eggs? Both of those will help, too.

I don't know why you don't eat meat and fish, but I've read that a lot of people with adrenal issues don't ... it just doesn't seem to "sit right" with them. If it's because you don't feel right afterward, you might find that changes after you get your adrenals healthier.

I'd start with a mild fish or a little chicken ... don't jump into eating bacon or something along those lines.

Great, I'll look again at my Whole Foods for the tea...I don't think I looked at the Traditional Medicinals.

If a Celiac person is successful in following a gluten-free diet, they can go into remission.   They may not have a reaction to gluten without a precipitating event like an injury or infection or even emotional or mental stress.   Following a strict gluten-free diet at home, then indulging in gluten containing products abroad without a reaction can be explained by this remission.

Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

Hi Theresa,  A few of my friends have your same story. You may be right about barley, etc.  18 years ago at a football game while clapping, suddenly my 4th finger was in agony.  It looked like a vein had burst. It was blue for a couple hours, then disappeared.  Finally realized it happened every time when drinking beer.  It's occurred several times over the years when opening a jar, lifting something that was a bit heavy, holding on to tight to something.  Immediate icing stops the pain and discoloration.  Now avoiding wheat in the US, it rarely happens.  Thanks for the reminder.  Will have Entero Labs run another test. Unfortunately they've relocated to Switzerland/Greece.

The EMA test is an old and less sensitive test for anti-tTG2 antibodies. It relies on a technician using a microscope to check for fluorescence of a labelled substrate (typically monkey oesophagus or human umbilicus), giving a simple positive/negative result. It is similar to running a standard anti-tTG2 test but with a high cut-off, making it more specific but less sensitive. Transient rises in tTG2 can be caused by e.g. viral infections and inflammation. Very high levels of anti-tTG2 (>x10 standard range) are almost certainly coeliac disease but moderately raised levels can have several causes apart from coeliac disease. Other food allergies can cause villi blunting but that is much rarer than coeliac disease or other non-coeliac causes. Not All That Flattens Villi Is Celiac Disease: A Review of Enteropathies
