I have a Ultra Juice Green supplement that contains barley grass. Is that also a no-no for gluten intolerant folks?

I don't know, Barlean's greens is gluten-free and it has barley leaf (as well as oat and rye leaf)...

I don't know how leaves are different from grasses, if they are at all

Most of them do claim to be gluten-free. I have a product that has some variation of barley in it that also claims to be gluten-free ... my digestive system has a different opinion though. ;)

Technically speaking, if they perfectly harvested the grass, it shouldn't have the grain ... I think that's why they claim to be gluten-free.

I am using a gluten-free barley grass and I don't see any problems or negative simptoms. I think they harvest the young barley grass before it makes the seed but I'm not sure. ??? Before I went gluten-free or ever heard of Celiac, I switched around between different brands and settled on this one that is... you guessed it... gluten-free. I liked it because I felt it worked better. I should have guessed it earlier.

The first few years that I was gluten free, I didn't react to barley, yet that does not mean you are not damaging yourself inside.

I found this out quite by accident. Quaker has a ricecake called Crackerjack, they actually have 2 different varieties of Crackerjack and I didn't know it. I loved them and was telling my sister about them--she warned me to be very careful because one brand had barley. That's when I read the ingredients and had been eating the wrong one for 2 weeks with no reaction. Now, I do react to barley, yet then I didn't.

I feel we should stay away from barley and wheat grasses!

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.
