Chocolate Chips And Ketchup

I have been making some AWESOME (if I do say so myself ) gluten-free choco chip cookies for my dh but lately he has been feeling glutened after eating them. I thought Nestle semi sweet were gluten-free but now am doubting my "gluten-free knowledge". One of the ingredients is vanillin-an artificial flavor. Is this gluten-free?

What kind of chocolate chips do you use?

Also, does Heinz ketchup bother anyone? He has been waking up with terrible reflux during the night after having Heinz ketchup. I do think he is sensitive to tomato products but was still wondering about Heinz.

Thanks so much for your help. This site has been a Godsend to us.

To my knowledge vanillin and Heinz are both gluten free.

Many Celiac's and other gluten-intolerant people are also 'allergic' to soy, or soy intolerant. That's the case with me and son.

We can't have chocolate chips or any chocolate candy because of the soy (lecithin) in them. Maybe your hubby's also intolerant of soy? Me and son get the same reaction from soy as we do from gluten.

Vanilla gives me a bad reaction, I use the real vanilla, but the same with vanillin I would assume. It just says alcohol on the bottle, and I assume, just guessing, that all alcohol is distilled in which the gluten is supposed to be lost in the process.

Same with vinegar, which is grain based but is now said to lose the gluten in the distilling process, the American-made vinegar only (from other countries it still may contain gluten). Me and son are enjoying vinegar again, and the Heinz ketchup doesn't give us a bad reaction.

But I still can't tolerate the bottled vanilla.

So it may be the tomatoes giving your hubby a reaction, like you said. Tomatoes are of the nightshade family, and some people have a bad reaction to nightshades. White potatoes and peppers are also nightshades, does he get a bad reaction from those too?

Or it may be the acid in the tomatoes giving him the reaction.

Well, I am thinking that the glutened reaction from the cookies may be from the soy in the chocolate chips.

Does your hub have a bad reaction to other things with soy in them? Soy is in just about all store-bought processed foods nowadays.

Or maybe he's super-sensitive to the vanillan in the cookies, like I am.

Experiment around to see. I leave out the vanilla in all my recipes, and it tastes just as good without the vanilla as with, can't figure that one out, but it does.

Best wishes!

I have a reaction to tomatoes a lot. Its not b/c of the nightshade thing, its the acidity in the tomatoes. I get heartburn something awful, not all the time mind you.. just when I am using a lot of tomato products or the ultimate onion! That is sure to get me everytime, especially if raw.. ouchy!

So for that you may have just a sensitivity to tomatoes acidity. I take prilosec to help. It does help. Most of my family has problems with just that, not the other nightshades.. its weird i guess!

As for choc chips, that I will admit, I have no clue! Sorry..

Enjoy Life makes gluten-free, soy free & dairy free chocolate chips that are very good.

Heinz Ketchup also has onion powder in it. Could that be causing his reflux?

It could well be a new intolerance developing.  Does your diet incorporate pure oats i.e. those safe for coeliac consumption?  I find I can only tolerate a certain amount, same goes for dairy in fact, then I start to get gastric symptoms.   Or have you started consuming a new type of gluten-free bread, or more gluten-free bread than normal, that might contain oats?  I remember reading a post on this forum from a woman who had started to eat a lot of loaves made with oat flour and her coeliac symptoms kicked off again.  I am sure you know this, but some coeliacs cannot tolerate pure oats.

I eat a lot of dairy but its intermittent is this burning so I would assume it would happen all the time. Plus I have been tested for lactose intolerance  etc and I am fine and the other symptoms of that I don't get. As a aside  my dad died last month after a long illness so I wonder if the stress of that might be a influence as a bodily reaction to stress.

You should be fine.  You may start feeling better within a few days.  Someone who is very low in thiamine may notice improvement within hours.   Did you get the NeuroMag  or another magnesium supplement?
