You don't have the genes for celiac and you don't have active gluten sensitivity. :)

What are your symptoms?

hi, on my interpertation that was sent with my results it says that "i have one of the main genes that predisposes to gluten sensitivity and celiac sprue, HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8. i also have a non celiac gene predipsoing to gluten sensitiivity DQ! or DQ3 not subtype 8."

my nightmare started at xmas of 2006 when i started getting D and swelling and hives and constant fatigue, i felt like i had the flu all the time. in jan 2008 i dropped 10lbs. i was 109lbs at 5'4" and went down to 97lbs. i had joint pain, and joint swelling as well, as i had stomach pain all the time, mouth sores and my hands and feet started getting what looked like pseriasis (SP!). i have been gluten and soy free since mid feb, have gained back the 10lbs feel 100% better!! however i know also get a rash on the inside of my knees and elbows that comes and goes as well. i also take pancreatic digestive enzymes now, as well as probiotics and iron. hope this helps thanks!!

Which of ur genes is the gene for celiac. Im not sure if i am not looking at them right but i dont see dq2 or dq8.

But from i can can tell from your results, it looks like u dont react to gluten at all or any of the other food intolerances. How long had u been gluten free prior to doing the test.

i talked to the nurse at enterolab, and she said that i have one gene that is a celiac sprue gene, and one gene for gluten sensitivity. she said the fecal antigliadin is very border line at 9. she said that i have probably caught it early, she said a year from now it could be a different story. she recomends that i not eat gluten, ill tell ya i feel a heck of a lot better not eating it. also soy gives me hives so i dont eat it either, she said that i may not produce enough i believe its antigliadin, and this is what sometimes can give people borderline results. arg im just fustrated as this is not as clear cut as i thought that it would be.

0302 is DQ2, I have that one.

Did the nurse say anything about IgA insufficency? Sometimes people test negative because their body doesn't produce enough IgA. I think there's a blood test that determines whether you do or not.

thanks thats what i was looking for, she recomended i get my doc to run that test, i will be seeing him soon so i will bring that up with him, does DQ2 mean you have celiacs? she seems to think that i may have caught this early before the reall damage began. she figured that having a baby and a hysterectomy last year may be what the catalist was to set this all off. the other gene she said means i have gluten sensitivity. thanks

No, it just means that people who have celiacs have one or the other gene, usually. However lots of people without celiac also have the gene. That is if you define celiac as villious atrophy, which is how the medicos currently define it. I think there are more shades of gray though.

Certainly if the diet helps, you've got something going on.

No, about 30% of the general public carry a celiac gene. Sorry, I messed up on the gene analysis. :( There is only one gene that is not gluten sensitive, that is the DQ4, so essentially everyone except Asians have gluten sensitive or celiac genes.

If all your symptoms resolved on the gluten-free diet, that's the best indicator.

If they haven't all resolved, I'd keep looking for what else might be wrong.

dally099 Contributor

me again, from what ive been reading on the net the DQ8 gene seems to be more rare then the DQ2. is this the case on this site? how many people have both the celiac gene and the sensitivity gene and what does this mean to you? thanks for all your input.

SUZ42 Explorer

DQ 3 (8) is a Celiac gene. I'm paraphrasing here, but: It is quite rare. Only abt 9 % of DQ 3 Celiacs carry this gene. It is found in peoples of Southern European/Mediteranean dissent (spelled wrong). I got this info from a couple places, I think EnteroLab was one of them.

Hi, does it really matter what the tests say? I had one test when I had insurance and a doctor and it came back negative as I had not eaten gluten for weeks prior. I've never been able to get tested since so have just had to read, read, read. I've been sick all my life and am now 60. The gluten-free diet (I've been doing for about 3 years) saved my life but I had to quit working and the internal damage has caused my immune system to go haywire. I get sick from anything I eat if I do not do a rotation diet and eating something once every 4 days is hard! I think we just have to go by how we feel and trial and error. I thought I had candida albicans for years and maybe I did but with lots of probiotics and a special diet for that, no sugar, flour, etc., got that under control. In all my books about candida I did read that some doctors believe it can cause autism, as well as some believe gluten can. Have you tried a special diet for your children?

dally099 Contributor

i have not tried gluten-free for my kids yet, my son was dairy free for a long time as a baby-preschooler, he is just such a fussy eater, i am starting to give him at least some of my cookies and the better tasting stuff. my hubby eats some of it, dosent mind the pasta, desserts, and of course all the sauces i cook are gluten-free. we think autism is genetic and triggered by enviromental issues, my 2 autistic kids were "off" since birth. my hubby is in the military and had chemical exposure right before i concieved both of them, were as my two typical (average normal i guess you could say) he had no chemical exposure. so its something that we are going to look into further as a lot of guys in the military have kids with autism, but we are waiting till he retires, as it will cause some ripples if you know what i mean. i found it interesting that i have the DQ 3(8) gene as im of Italian/Russian decent. pretty cool i guess, (need to find something positive in all this). thanks for all the help!!

nora-n Rookie

0302 is DQ8 and one of the celiac genes, but the DQ5 is one of the DQ1 types, and there have been several postings here and on the neurotalk gluten-sensitivity forum that the DQ1 can be very sensitive to gluten, more than ordinary celiacs.

I tested negative for DQ2 or 8, (cannot get the actual results here in this country, this was done at the lab of some well-known celiac researchers) and I am sure it is DQ1 because I get neurological symptoms from gluten.

I also react to the tiniest amounts of gluten.

I had the same thing happen to me at around your age, and to this day it's the most painful experience I've ever had. For me it was the right side of my head, above my ear, running from my nerves in my neck. For years before my outbreak I felt a tingling sensation shooting along the exact nerves that ended up exactly where the shingles blisters appeared. I highly recommend the two shot shingles vaccine as soon as your turn 50--I did this because I started to get the same tingling sensations in the same area, and after the vaccines I've never felt that again.  As you likely know, shingles is caused by chicken pox, which was once though of as one of those harmless childhood viruses that everyone should catch in the wild--little did they know that it can stay in your nervous system for your entire life, and cause major issues as you age.

Thanks for the info. I recently moved to CA from Wyoming and in that western region the Costco and Sam's /Walmart Brands have many nuts and more products that are labeled gluten free. I was told it's because those products are packaged and processed  in different  plants. Some plants can be labeled  gluten free because the plant does not also package gluten products and they know that for example the trucks, containers equipment are not used to handle wheat, barely or Rye. The Walmart butter in the western region says gluten free but not here. Most of The Kirkland and Members Mark brands in CA say they are from Vietnam. That's not the case in Wyoming and Colorado. I've spoken to customer service at the stores here in California. They were not helpful. I check labels every time I go to the store. The stores where I am are a Sh*tshow. The Magalopoly grocery chain Vons/Safeway/Albertsons, etc. are the same. Fishers and Planters brands no longer say gluten free. It could be regional. There are nuts with sugar coatings and fruit and nut mixes at the big chains that are labeled gluten free but I don't want the fruit or sugar.  It's so difficult I am considering moving again. I thought it would be easier to find safe food in a more populated area. It's actually worse.  I was undiagnosed for most of my life but not because I didn't try to figure it out. So I have had all the complications possible. I don't have any spare organs left.  No a little gluten will hurt you. The autoimmune process continues to destroy your organs though you may not feel it. If you are getting a little all the time and as much as we try we probably all are and so the damage is happening. Now the FDA has pretty much abandoned celiacs. There are no requirements for labeling for common allergens on medications. All the generic drugs made outside the US are not regulated for common allergens and the FDA is taking the last gluten free porcine Thyroid med, NP Thyroid, off the market in 2026. I was being glutened by a generic levothyroxin. The insurance wouldn't pay for the gluten free brand any longer because the FDA took them all off their approved formulary. So now I am paying $147 out of pocket for NP Thyroid but shortly I will have no safe choice. Other people with allergies should be aware that these foreign generic pharmaceutical producers are using ground shellfish shell as pill coatings and anti-desicants. The FDA knows this but  now just waits for consumers to complain or die. The take over of Wholefoods by Amazon destroyed a very reliable source of good high quality food for people with allergies and for people who wanted good reliably organic food. Bezos thought  he could make a fortune off people who were paying alot for organic and allergen free food by substituting cheap brands from Thailand. He didn't understand who the customers were who were willing to pay more for that food and why. I went from spending hundreds to nothing because Bezo removed every single trusted brand that I was buying. Now they are closing Whole foods stores across the country. In CA, Mill Valley store (closed July 2025) and the National Blvd. store in West Los Angeles (closed October 2025). The Cupertino store will close.  In recent years I have learned to be careful and trust no one. I have been deleberately glutened in a restaurant that was my favorite (a new employee). The Chef owner was not in the kitchen that night. I've had  a metal scouring pad cut up over my food. The chain offered gluten free dishes but it only takes one crazy who thinks you're a problem as a food fadist. Good thing I always look. Good thing they didn't do that to food going to a child with a busy mom.  I give big tips and apologize for having to ask in restaurants but mental illness seem to be rampant. I've learn the hard way.          I don't buy any processed food that doesn't say gluten free.  I am a life long Catholic. I worked for the Church while at college. I don't go to Church anymore because the men at the top decided Jesus is gluten. The special hosts are gluten less not gluten free. No I can't drink wine after people with gluten in their mouth and a variety of deadly germs. I have been abandoned and excluded by my Church/Family.  Having nearly died several times, safe food is paramount. If your immune system collapses as mine did, you get sepsis. It can kill you very quickly. I spent 5 days unconscious and had to have my appendix and gall bladder removed because they were necrotic. I was 25. They didn't figure out I had celiac till I was 53. No one will take the time to tell you what can happen when your immune system gets overwhelmed from its constant fighting the gluten and just stops. It is miserable that our food is processed so carelessly. Our food in many aspects is not safe. And the merging of all the grocery chains has made it far worse. Its a disaster. Krogers also recently purchased Vitacost where I was getting the products I could no longer get at Whole Foods. Kroger is eliminating those products from Vitacost just a Bezos did from WF. I am looking for reliable and certified sources for nuts. I have lived the worst consequences of the disease and being exposed unknowingly and maliciously. Once I was diagnosed I learned way more than anyone should have to about the food industry.  I don't do gray areas. And now I dont eat out except very rarely.  I have not eaten fast food for 30 years before the celiac diagnosis. Gluten aside..... It's not food and it's not safe.  No one has got our backs. Sharing safe food sources is one thing we can do to try to be safe.
