Sudden Weight Gain

Has anyone experienced a sudden, overnight weight gain? I watch my diet very closely and have been steadily losing weight. (I don't bake a lot of gluten free goodies). The only thing that changed in my diet yesterday was my husband made potato salad and we had gluten free (Pamela's) pancakes for breakfast. We have had the pancakes before and it didn't affect my weight. The weight gain was 8 lbs overnight? What happened? Is this a normal response? We rarely eat potatoes but had a baked potato Saturday and then potato salad on Sunday. Is this a food reaction?

Yes, I do. I just realized it this past week. I can eat a few potatos or items containing potatoes but not very much. I don't know if it a new thing, related to recently going gluten-free or something I had all along but ignored.

I get bloated feeling, stomach pain and my waist went up by three inches.

Good luck!

Are you sure you didnt get gluten? Maybe cross contamination? That is what happens to me when I accidently injest gluten.

If you gain weight that suddenly it's water retention, and that to me would seem like a reaction to something that you ate.

Well, this morning my weight is coming back down and I am within 1 lb of where I was. Whew! I don't look 6 months pregnant anymore!! I'll have to watch the potatoes, although my husband stated that he did have a peanut butter sandwich just before making the potato salad. So I wouldn't rule out contamination either. I'm staying away from the potato salad either way. Maybe in a few weeks, I'll have a potato and see what happens.

Do any of you find other foods you react to that you know don't have gluten? I have problems with too much dairy. I tolerate about 1 serving of cheese or a cup of milk. So I reserve my dairy for baking. I realize that dairy is pretty common. I can't have soy either.

Thanks for all your input.

Sandy, I can't have gluten, dairy (at all), eggs, legumes or nightshades... but as long as I stay away from all of those I'm good, no gas, bloating or funny poops. It's quite possible to have a few food intolerances...but also, your husband should learn that he must wash his hands before preparing food for you! Otherwise you always risk cross contamination.

I know how you feel I work so hard to keep weight off I work out side mowing with push mower and I weed every thing every weed we have 6 acreas there is always something to do. I been gluten free for 4 years I never had and gluten free bread are pasta or the gluten free goodies. I have gained 13 pounds in 3 months and always get bloated after I eat like I am 8 month's pregant I say 8 becaise I never showed untill I was about 7 months. I never had a weight problem when I was young either. Any suggestions. What do you eat for breckfast if you don't eat eggs are have milk I don't eat pancakes are any thing like that but I was eating grits I guess I will quit that and potatoes maybe that making me fat. My husband said it got to be my system he knows what I eat and how hard I work, just really getting mad.

I know how you feel. My dad and an aunt have celiacs as well. Once my dad started following a gluten free diet, the weight started dropping right off. He looks fabulous. My aunt is the same way but she has a couple other food sensitivities and can put on weight over night, but overall she has lost and is at her recommended weight. Me, I struggle. I eat the healthiest of the three of us and I have weight control problems. It's frustrating!!! My aunt actually accused me of cheating on my gluten free diet. Boy, I showed her! No junk food in my house! My weight has stabilized once again and is back down to where it was before. I suspect a food intolerance. I'm going to stay away from potatoes for a while.

Betty, I eat rice cakes with nut butter and deli meat for breakfast, plus two pieces of fruit, like a banana and an apple for example. Or I mix apple sauce and coconut milk and have that with gluten free corn flakes.

If I have a long day ahead of me I like to have dinner for breakfast, so stir fry veggies and meat. :)If I know I'm going to be in a hurry in the morning, I cook extra the night before for dinner and have the leftovers for breakfast.

Try to think outside of the box, you can have anything for breakfast as long as it isn't something you are intolerant to. :)

Sandy, glad to hear your weight stabilized again. I agree it sounds like some food you reacted to.

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system
