Purely Decadent Soy Ice Cream

Sometimes when I eat Purely Decadent Soy Ice Cream (pnut butter zig zag) I get a tummy ache. The carton states that they test for gluten (i think), or something about it not containing gluten. I just read a thread on here that contained a statement from an email saying some of their flavorings use grain alcohol. It was probably the vanilla flavoring that bothered me! I had a few bites of a P.D. Soy Delicious Vanilla Almond bar right before I read that..I wonder if I'll be getting sick from that today.. =(

Just a heads up to let everyone know that that certain flavor might not be completely gluten free..

i had also heard that they use careegan (sp?) and that can cause gi problems in somepeople. When i ate it i chalked it up to that becasue all i got was GI symtoms, not the rest.

I ate Peanut Butter Zig Zag with no problems at all. I am sorry it makes you feel bad. I dont know why, it is supposedly gluten free. There was an exhibit at the conference with them there too, so I assumed its gluten free, the ingredients dont show anything..

I hope you feel better.

Sometimes it bothers me, sometimes it doesn't. Maybe they use grain alcohol for the vanilla flavoring, and they don't realize it has gluten or they're not fully educated on it. ? I dunno, maybe I just get tummy aches for no reason =/

Thanks =)

I don't remember seeing carageenan in that specific flavor, but I know that stuff gives me GI problems. Thanks for pointing that out!

I just had Purely Decadent Soy Ice Cream (peanut butter zig zag) and I'm suffering as well!! It does state clearly that it is dairy free, however it doesn't say gluten free. But they do say they test for gluten, but then don't follow up with a clear claim that it is Gluten free!! You'd think if they put all the effort into testing for gluten then they would put a gluten free label on it, but they don't so it probably isn't. I'm so uncomfortable right now I defintely won't be buying it again!

I've had this happen with the Rice Dreams ice cream as well, anyone else?

I haven't ever tried Rice Dream ice cream. But Rice Dream milk made me sick, and it bothers some other people too. You can search the forum for Rice Dream and find plenty of posts about it being bad.

Soy is another possible culprit in the ice cream. Soy is one of the top eight allergens in the US and seems to affect some of us celiacs also. There is a brand of ice cream called So Delicious that is made with coconut milk that might work better. Another one I haven;t tried but others have posted that they like it. There is also Luigi's Italian Ice that is dairy free.

Anyhow, welcome to the forum! :-)

It's gluten-free.

Rather than assuming some products, which proclaim they are gluten free, are not, consider whether you may have soy or vanilla allergies. Those are 2 of my delayed reaction (IgG and IgA) allergens. Of course the 'purists' may say those are 'intolerances', but whatever ... my ELISA test results told me to avoid 6 other foods besides gluten. When I abstain from those and gluten, I have no problems.

The Purely Decadent Coconut Milk ice cream in the cookie dough flavor is the only ice cream I have been able to eat without any problems. Well, maybe only one problem... I can't stop eating it... It is the only flavor that is both gluten free and dairy free - it is Parve meaning it has absolutely no milk products in it. It is too yummy.

Cookie dough? Oh, dear... I thought I'd have to give up my addiction to Ben & Jerry's chocolate chip cookie dough, which was putting POUNDS on me. Now you tell me there's one that's gluten-free/CF? Mmmmmmm.... I hope my local stores don't carry it!

Many of them are both gluten-free and dairy-free, not just this flavour. Unless they changed it.

I haven't had any problem with any of the Purely Decadent soy or coconut milk flavors that I've tried. (Thank goodness, because they're so good!) All of their products are dairy-free and they have an allergen chart on their website that indicates which flavors contain gluten: http//turtlemountain.com/health/allergies.html It says the Peanut Butter Zig Zag flavor is gluten-free, so there might be something else in there that's causing a problem. They do say they test for the presence of allergens in all of their products, so I trust that there isn't any gluten in this particular flavor.

I am on day 13 of eating gluten  and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone and/or the renal calcium leak.    I have spent the past 15 years working hard to improve my health. I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
