Grocery Outlet!

I was strolling the grocery outlet (the one with the rainbow) while on vacation at the beach yesterday. I passed the freezer section, they have amy's dinners!! Rice lasagna!! then today, out of curiosity I went to the one in Salem, they have them too!! This one also had mac n cheese and penne bowls. All gluten-free!! And the best part? They were between $1.50 and $2.00!! I bought them out. I asked the checker, and he said that the guy who orders for the store can order them as long as there is a demand... This MIGHT be the case for all grocery outlets, so go check!! I'm eating one right now!

Thanks, I will check my local store tommorrow!

Yay! I hope you find them. My freezer is bursting at the seams!! I usually don't eat prepackaged food. But this is a good back-up. Mmm yum. I haven't had mac n cheese for 10 months. Until today. Amazing. Yay!

I will check! Maybe they can order Bell & Evans & Kinnikinnick too! :D

For those of you in Oregon and Washington--Fred Meyer usually has the mac&cheese, and Amy's bowls (shepards pie, teryaki chicken, enchilada etc) in their health food area freezer section. I also HIGHLY recommend Lingonberries in Vancouver, (east of SR 500) The entire store is gluten-free and they have everything you can possibly imagine--including gluten-free grown and processed oats for those who want to add them back into their diet. It is owned by a nutritionist and her husband (she has celiac). They are a great resouce. For those who have kids, we are always looking for new members for our ROCK group!!! Let me know if you're interested. Take care.

I do my regular shopping at freddies. But the amy's stuff is super expensive!! Portland is 90 min away. I refuse to drive 90 min for food!! Salem has Lifesource, it's a little store, but they have some specialty gluten-free stuff. Freddies has a ton of stuff, but $1.50 for gluten-free mac n cheese, you can't beat that!!

Oh and the woman who owns lingonberries isn't celiac, she just follows the diet. I met her at the Salem support group meting. That's what she told me anyway, maybe something changed.

I agree, pretty much all of the specialty food is super expensive. I will stock up on certain items when they are on sale-our Wild Oat's has pretty good sales, but for the most part, I alter regular recipes, batch cook and freeze in small containers for my daughter. If you're looking for a good mac&cheese, the Better Homes and Gardens recipe is what I modify. If you want the recipe, I can write down what I do... I was mistaken about Dee. She is a registered dietician who LIVES gluten free, but specializes in diabetes and celiac disease. She was at our home not too long ago and was telling me about certain foods that make her sick, I just assumed....

my daughter loves mac & cheese. I usually just buy the Tinkyada elbows (follow cooking directions - boil water and add a little salt and add pasta. cook for 15 minutes (do not overcook, otherwise it gets mushy -- rinse the pasta under cold water) I add american cheese and milk. She's happy with that.

Hey @Butch68, I also have dermatitis herpetiformis but don't suffer from it anymore. I used to drink Guinness too but I drink Cider now when out on social occasions. I assume you are in Ireland or the UK. If it's any good to you ... 9 White Deer based in Cork brew a range of gluten-free products including a gluten-free Stout. I'm not sure if they are certified though. https://www.9whitedeer.ie/ I haven't come across any certified gluten-free stouts this side of the pond.

This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

Interestingly, this thought occurred to me last night. I did find that there are studies investigating whether vitamin D deficiency can actually trigger celiac disease.  Source: National Institutes of Health https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7231074/

Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.
