Does anyone know of a good gluten free, soy free, yeast free, dairy free multivitam?

I take Nature Made Essential Daily. I know it is gluten free, and I'm pretty sure it is free of the other things too, but I don't have my bottle with me to check. I like that it only has 100% of the vitamins instead of going overboard with massive doses. It also uses a less acidic version of Vitamin C, which is necessary for me since I have a bladder condition and can't have ascorbic acid (the usual form of Vitamin C in vitamins).

Thankyou for the reply. I'll definitely check those out. :)

Ms. Celiac Apprentice

I take ADEK chewable tablets. These vitamins are very good for people with malabsorptive conditions, as they are already partially broken down or pre-digested. It contains all of the essential vitamins at the normal amounts with high levels of vitamins A, D, E, and K. I know it is gluten free and I'm fairly certain it is free of the other things you mentioned as well but you can check at AXCAN Pharma's webpage.

I called Nature Made and their vitamins are also cf and sf. YAY!

I'll definitely check into those other vitamins too though. They sound really good. Thanks for the tip, Ms. Celiac.

I just started to take Kirkman Labs prenatal vitamin today. It says it does not contain sugar, starch, soy, acacia, wheat, corn, milk, yeast, casein, gliadin, gluten or artificial colorings. Many of their other products are free of many things too. Plus, they offer trial packs.

Does anyone have advice of taking vitamins? Should I be ramping up to it? I took one (1/2 of daily dosage) at dinner time tonight and I'm having alot of pain...could it be ascorbic acid? I've been having trouble with acidic foods lately. Just curious what others have done.

Thanks,

Kim

Hi Caraline, (Re: Vitamins)

My wife has celiac disease. Most people don't know that gluten naturally exists not only in wheat, but in barley and rye as well. Her diet is so limited that we have devoted a separate section of the kitchen counter to her gluten-free food and I bought a second cutting board, which I labeled with a Sharpee as "Gluten Free", designating one side to always face down so the actual cutting side of the board can never be accidentally contaminated.

I mention this because she is such a sensitive celiac that finding a vitamin to assist her in getting the proper nutrition with her diet was nearly impossible. Believe me, when my wife gets sick from gluten contamination, she is sick for 4 days, minimum. It's horrible for her.

But, we actually found a vitamin that she has no reaction to by Nutrilite. It's been a savior, because, as I said, her diet is very limited and we were worried she wasn't getting enough in the way of vitamins in her daily uptake of available foods. But, well, here is the thing...

I feel bad mentioning this because it turns out we actually sell the vitamin in our internet business. -- DON'T STOP READING YET! -- I had no idea it was even available to us until I stumbled upon it two weeks ago.

I cannot (nor would I) post the link to the product in this post, because it would violate the rules of conduct of this forum and I do not want to do that. But, if you are interested, you can go to my profile on this site where the link to the product is provided. It's really inexpensive and it provides a 180 day supply for about $22. The product has a 180 satisfaction guarantee, so there's no risk if you want to send it back.

Again, I feel bad even mentioning that we sell this product, and I'm sure some here will vilify me for letting you know we do. But, and this is the God's honest truth, I'm posting this message because my wife can so easily get sick from so many things that, well, I just wanted people to have the option if they wanted it.

Please take this post with the sincerity that was intended and I hope it helps. Feel free to email me with questions about other things as well. My wife and I have actually developed some pretty strict kitchen protocols (like the additional cutting board) that have helped her greatly over the last year. Sounds very restricted, I know, but it's a heck of a lot better than her getting sick.

Sincerely,

Jeff Sherwood

Kim,

No need to "ramp up" so to speak, but you should always take vitamins with a meal. Many vitamins are fat and/or water soluble, which means they need food in order to be absorbed. Also, taking vitamins on an empty stomach is a great way to experience nausea and that "jangly" feeling, because, well, some vitamins are acidic, some have base qualities, etc. Food provides that buffer and absorbtion vehicle.

I mentioned that my wife was a celiac in another post, but I should also mention that I am a personal trainer as well and advise people on their diet daily. I have learned a tremendous amount about food and nutrition ever since we discovered my wife was a celiac back in April of 2006.

Best Regards,

Jeff Sherwood

I would like to add here to be very careful of the companies who do say they are gluten free. Always read the label and judge for yourself. I have a Puritan Pride outlet store near me and I found Puritan Pride Woman + 50 vitamins similiar to the Nature Made Woman + 50 that I take now. I asked if they were gluten free and immediately the woman went online to check, which she came back to me verifing, that yes, they are gluten free, which at the same time, I was reading the contents and up pops "barley grasses". So, I asked about the barley grass, stating that barley is a gluten. She then calls the company and they stated that the barley grass does not constitute enough gluten in their opinion to consider it gluten so they can still call the product "gluten free". Well, I do not feel they can judge how much "barley grass" is ok for me. I will not purchase the product. ALWAYS READ THE INGREDIENTS!

Nature Made is a proven company--Natrol is another company who will list the ingredients. I also must have soy, corn, rice, and gluten free--so it's always fun looking for products.

I learned the lesson about the gluten free thing the hard way. I was in a hurry and was looking for some vitamins at a health food store and I bought some that said they were dairy, soy, gluten, yeast, corn, etc...free. However, when I got home I was looking at the ingredients and under superfoods it said that they contained barley and oat grass juices. I was really mad because the vitamins were pretty expensive. <_< At least now I know though.

Deb, what kind of vitamins do you take?

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @McKinleyWY! There currently is no testing for celiac disease that does not require you to have been consuming generous amounts of gluten (at least 10g daily, about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for at least two weeks and, to be certain of accurate testing, longer than that. This applies to both phases of testing, the blood antibody tests and the endoscopy with biopsy.  There is the option of genetic testing to see if you have one or both of the two genes known to provide the potential to develop celiac disease. It is not really a diagnostic measure, however, as 30-40% of the general population has one or both of these genes whereas only about 1% of the general population actually develops celiac disease. But genetic testing is valuable as a rule out measure. If you don't have either of the genes, it is highly unlikely that you can have celiac disease. Having said all that, even if you don't have celiac disease you can have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms as celiac disease but does not involve and autoimmune reaction that damages the lining of the small bowel as does celiac disease. Both conditions call for the complete elimination of gluten from the diet. I hope this brings some clarity to your questions.

Hello all, I was diagnosed at the age of 2 as being allergic to yeast.  All my life I have avoided bread and most products containing enriched flour as they  contain yeast (when making the man made vitamins to add back in to the flour).  Within the last year or so, we discovered that even whole wheat products bother me but strangely enough I can eat gluten free bread with yeast and have no reactions.  Obviously, we have come to believe the issue is gluten not yeast.  Times continues to reinforce this as we are transitioning to a gluten free home and family.  I become quite ill when I consume even the smallest amount of gluten. How will my not having consumed breads/yeast/gluten for the better part of decades impact a biopsy or blood work?  I would love to know if it is a gluten intolerance or a genetic issue for family members but unsure of the results given my history of limited gluten intake.   I appreciate the input from those who have gone before me in experience and knowledge. Thank you all!

I know what you mean. When I get glutened I have severe gut cramps and throw up for 2-3 hr. and then have diarrhea for another several hours. Avoid eating out if at all possible. It is the number one source of gluten contamination for us celiacs. When you are forced to eat out at a new restaurant that you are not sure is safe, try to order things that you can be sure will not get cross contaminated like a boiled egg, baked potatos, steamed vegies, fresh fruit. Yes, I know that doesn't sound as appetizing as pizza or a burger and fries but your health is at stake. I also realize that as a 14 year old you don't have a lot of control over where you eat out because you are tagging along with others or adults are paying for it. Do you have support from your parents concerning your need to eat gluten free? Do you believe they have a good understanding of the many places gluten can show up in the food supply?

Okay went online to check green mountain k cups .It was said that the regular coffees are fine but they couldn’t guarantee cross contamination.with the flavors. im trying to figure out since I eliminated the suyrup so far so good. I’m hoping. thanks it feels good to listen to other people there views.

Thank you I will i have been on a strict gluten free diet ever since I got diagnosed but sometimes places lie about there food so there r some things that do get contaminated which causes me to throw up on end for several hours until I can't hold myself up anymore
