Ok, my kids finally had their bloodwork done adn I got the results today, since we are not gonna see the Gastroenterologist for another month I need your help!

My 11 month old

HLA DQ2 positive

HLA DQ 8 positive

HLA allelic variants associated w. Celiac disease detected. DQ2 hererodimer (HLA DQA1*0201/DQB1*02) and DQ8.

my son (4.5yrs. old)

HLA DQ2 positive

HLA DQ 8 negative

HLA allelic variants associated w. Celiac disease detected. DQ2 hererodimer (HLA DQA1*0201/DQB1*02)

My girl is positive, positive, and my son is positive and negative! Bottom line what do the results mean (short of a Endoscopy), for my daughter and then also for my son since he has one pos. and one neg.

Thank you for you help!

HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8, whether or not it's "positive" or "negative" are the two genes associated with Celiac Disease. HLA-DQ2 is the most common; something like 91% of the people with Celiac Disease have this one. Another 7% have HLA-DQ8, and the remaining 1% have neither. Having these genes does not mean you will definitely get Celiac Disease; over 30% of the population have one of these genes but only 1% gets the disease. However, if there seem to be symptoms associated with gluten, and these symptoms go away when gluten is completely removed, and with the genes your children have, it would mean they almost certainly have Celiac Disease even if the IGA and IGG serological blood tests come back negative and a biopsy is inconclusive.

What is interesting to note, though, is that since both children have two Celiac genes, that means both you and your husband have the genes for Celiac Disease and are therefore susceptible yourselves.

Did they also have bloodwork, or just the genes. If so what did the bloodwork say.

No, they did only test for the Genes, the Gastroenterologist was smiling aobut me not really thinking that something would come up!

I'l planning on getting a stooltest from enterolab, which one should I take- the genes are obviously there! I can't afford to buy both at the same time so whichone would you guys recommend?

Gluten Sensitivity Stool Test Fecal Antigliadin IgA antibody

Tissue Transglutaminase Stool Test Fecal Anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA antibody

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.
