Hi

My birthday is next week and I'm trying to find a place to eat out which i dont normally do b/c im scared of getting sick. teh only place we have been is boynton and elephant walk. has anyone eaten at rialto in cambridge or maggaianos? Maggianos told me they dont have a menu be will serve gluten-free pasta? has anyone had an experience there? I also called fireplace in brookline and they said they would email me a copy of thier gluten-free menu. i'm also a vegetarian so its hard for me to find something to eat. it woudl be great to hear if anyone has eaten at fireplace, rialto or maggianos and what they thought!

Hi!

I ate at Mangiano's for a company lunch. Prior to arriving I found out that the vendor who was taking us out there, had called ahead and ordered family size portions of everything-and I couldnt have one dish he had selected. I thought I was to go hungry, but once they told the waiter and the manager came right out and spoke to me about options. They had gluten free pasta available, and gave me a list of sauces that I could and could not have. They brought me out my own salad with oil and vinegar, since they claimed all the dressings had gluten in them. For my meal i got rice pasta with a tomato primavera--loads of veggies. Then without me even have to order it, they brought out a creme brulee just for me for dessert. It was huge! Portions were great, I ate my pasta for two meals after. Overall a very happy experience there. I have heard its good to call ahead, just to make sure they have the gluten-free pasta on hand though.

For another alternative---the owners of the Beacon Street Tavern and Washington Square Tavern are very celiac friendly! They have a daughter or son who was diagnosed. While they don't have a gluten free menu, they are very aware about the disease and cross contamination etc. They also stock their bars with Redbridge-the gluten free beer from Anheiser Busch.

Have fun and happy birthday!

Legal Seafoods is great about all food alleriges/intolerances. I ate at the Warwick, RI location a couple of weeks ago and it was awesome.

I had the most awful experience at the Legal Seafoods in the Theater District. They put regular ritz crackers on my lobster bake, and apologized, but wouldn't give me my money back because they said it would constitute a refund for "medical reasons" and I would have to sign a waiver first!!!

But, I had a great meal at the PF Changs in the Theater District, at the Maggiano's down there (like you said, no gluten-free menu, but a great staff, and chef, that explained what he could make for me, with gluten-free pasta), and at the elephant walk....but I know you said you are sick of them. Happy Birthday!

Happy early birthday!

I had a TERRIBLE time at Maggiano's -- I think it might depend on when you go. I've been to the one in Philly, and it's always been terrific -- the chef comes out and everything -- but I went on a Saturday night a few weeks ago, and the waiter refused to give me anything except for gluten-free pasta and tomato sauce. He even threw a big fuss if I asked if I could have chicken, or veggies in it! Then when the pasta DID come, I suspect it was cooked in regular pasta water, because I got so sick afterward. So I think that Maggiano's isn't so great if you're going on a busy night. Maybe it's ok at other times? I know I won't be back to that one, myself.

I love Fireplace, but I am definitely a meat eater, so I don't know what their vegetarian gluten-free options are like. If you told them enough in advance, though, I suspect that there's a chance that they could whip something up for you. If not, what about some place like wagamama's?

I would suggest making reservations at Rialto because I had the BEST EVER gluten-free meal there and you will not get sick. It's a high end place, with educated people working there and they know gluten inside out. The gluten-free menu is larger than most places and the chef, Jody Adams, is Julia Child caliber and truly gets it with regards to Celiac. It's your birthday and you are worth it!

One note.....the portion sizes are small and it's because Jody Adams designs the menu around courses. They offer a 4 course meal at $60.00 and by the time you finish all 4 courses, you should be pleasantly full. It really is worth the money, if you are into high end places that understand the gluten issue.

Legal Seafoods is Great

But on the cheaper side of things...Pizzeria Uno had a gluten free menu. (Sure it's not a high class restaurant but...maybe some other folks might like the suggestion.

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

Please do more research before you settle on nicotine. Dr. Paul New house is a psychiatrist.  His latest study involves the effect of nicotine patches on Late Life Depression which has reached no long term conclusions about the benefits.   Effects of open-label transdermal nicotine antidepressant augmentation on affective symptoms and executive function in late-life depression https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39009312/   I'm approaching the subject from the Microbiologist's point of view which shows nicotine blocks Thiamine B1 uptake and usage:   Chronic Nicotine Exposure In Vivo and In Vitro Inhibits Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Uptake by Pancreatic Acinar Cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633299/   While supplementation with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine can protect from damage done by  nicotine: Benfotiamine attenuates nicotine and uric acid-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction in the rat https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18951979/   I suggest you study the beneficial effects of Thiamine (Benfotiamine and TTFD) on the body and mental health done by Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs.  Dr. Lonsdale had studied thiamine over fifty years.   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/ I suggest you read their book Thiamine Deficiency Disease, Dysautonomia, and High Calorie Malnutrition.     Celiac Disease is a disease of malabsorption causing malnutrition.  Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.
