Spelt Bread

Hi there,

I know that spelt is a distant cousin of wheat, but from what i've read it's supposed to be easier to digest than wheat. Has anyone tried it and what reactions did you have to it? We bought hamburger buns, out of desperation, at Whole Foods and my husband had one roll just to try it out. Will see what happens. Keeping our fingers crossed. :unsure:

Spelt is not gluten free. It is closely enough related that the very similar amino acid sequences in the proteins are very likely to cause damage.

I personally haven't tried it, but I have a friend who we believe is coeliac. He was having spelt porrige and bread each day, thinking it was safe. He has the worst gluten intolerance I have ever heard of. :(

I beleive he is coeliac too.

He stopped having both after I told him it was a wheat product. He was getting severe bloating and pain and wondered why. He improved after cutting it from his diet.

Now he doesn't eat any bread at all, just to be safe. Maggie

Spelt MIGHT be OK if you have a wheat allergy, depending on how severe, but it is NOT OK if you have celiac. Even if he doesn't react, he's doing damage.

      Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

      Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

      Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

      It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
