Glucose Test

Does any one have experience with the glucose testing they do during pregnancy? I'm not sure I should do the test as I've read that most of the solution they have you drink is corn syrup, is this right? I react to corn pretty badly - headache etc. Also, is that solution gluten-free? I have an appt. tomorrow and will ask my doc. about it but figured I'd see if any one else has this problem.

TIA!

Amy

I can't address the corn or gluten issue but the glucose tolerance test is an important screening tool for gestational diabetes, which is quite common and if let untreated carries serious risks for both mother and child. I had it and was diagnosed this way through a routine screening when I was pregnant with my son.

i dont know about the corn, but it is gluten free. i had to have it done 3 times as i am high risk for developing diabetes (i didnt, thank God, but did have an 11+ lb son anyways  ) but i highly recommend the lemon/lime flavor to the orange, but that is cuz i like sprite way better than orange flavored anything...and if you chug it, its not bad at all :D its like chugging a 1/2 liter of soda or so.

good luck!

You would have to tell the Dr. that you are allergic to corn. I have read that the test can also be done with jelly beans (again, corn might be an issue), but they can probably come up with something that isn't corn based.

I want to be able to make sure everything is okay but I also can't risk putting a substance in my body that I may react to. I've been so restrictive during this pregancy I've only ate out twice in six months. One time I got glutened and couldn't walk for two days and the second time I went to the only restaurant I trust to make a truly gluten-free meal (the chef happens to have celiac disease so I know he knows what he is doing :) ) Corn just gives me wicked headaches and I can't imagine what else it does to my body that I don't know about. I'll have to research the jelly bean thing but most of those have coryn syrup something or other in them. Ugh. Such a P.I.T.A!!! Maybe my nutritionist would know.... Thanks every one for the responses I really appreciate it!

Oh I have 2 dogs. And I just looked up the ingredients in their food and it does contain barley as a main ingredient. Maybe some other things too that aren't helpful but barley just caught my eye on a quick look.  And yes I spend lots of time with them, they're always cuddled up on me. I even have wondered before if I was allergic to them and I take Allegra at night out of some thought that maybe I was allergic to them (but I've never confirmed that).  Wow. This is very interesting. I could try putting them out on some grain-free food for a month and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip!

Hi Thanks for answering so quickly. Not sure about any other blood tests, all I have is a copy of what my daughter sent to me. Hopefully she’ll get the biopsy soon cos she’s really anxious about the whole thing, but she tends to have a lot of anxiety anyway and has done for a long time

Welcome to the forum, @Heatherisle! Yes, not uncommon for multiple celiac antibody tests to not agree. The Endomysial IGA was the first antibody test developed to detect celiac disease. It is expensive to run and has largely been replaced by the tTG-IGA. But some physicians, particularly those who have been in practice for awhile, still order the EMA. It's a good test. Was there a "total IGA" test run to check for IGA deficiency?

Hi  New to this so bear with me!!! My daughter was told a few years ago she probably had IBS but been feeling generally worse lately Recent IgA TTG Ab blood test indicative of coeliac at 19 U/ml but Endomysial IgA Abs negative. Awaiting appointment for biopsy , so was wondering if anyone else has had these differing results. Thank you

The article was shocking - and horrifying - to read. For me it’s a good argument to cook as many fresh foods as possible. I personally can’t do grain free because I lose weight too quickly and don’t feel full, but I will be sticking to companies I trust like Lundberg for rice.    I live in Germany and thankfully, labeling here is more transparent and more trustworthy than it appears to be in the U.S. these days (where I’m also originally from).  I am so sorry to hear this! May you heal quickly. ❤️
