Constipation

My 2 yr old daughter who we suspect has celiac disease has been gluten free for a few months now. We've never had constipation problems before, but since going on a trip two weeks ago to Disney she's been really constipated even though i'm giving her a lot of fruits and fiber. Instead of going once or twice a day (like she used to before our trip) she now goes every 4 days...Does this sound familiar to anyone? Help!

Did she eat fries and things while there? Sometimes things you don't expect to have gluten in them, do have gluten in them. It could be celiac disease or it could be that she is constipated from the fatty foods supplied at Disney Land!

If it doesn't get better once she is back on her regular diet, I would suggest seeing a doctor.

I’ve used tinctures and made my own edibles with gluten-free ingredients to stay safe. Dispensary staff don’t always know about gluten, so I double-check labels or just make my own.

It's great to hear that there are some good doctors out there, and this is an example of why having a formal diagnosis can definitely be helpful.

Update: I have a wonderful new gastroenterologist. She wants to be sure there’s nothing more serious, like refractory celiac, going on. She ordered various tests including some micronutrient tests that no one has ever ordered before.  I’m deficient in folate and zinc and starting supplements for both. I’m so glad I decided to go to a new GI!

Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster. Many of them are found close together on the chromosomes.

Just giving another update... I was referred to rheumatology, and they suspect that I may also be dealing with fibromyalgia (it has not been formally diagnosed, but just suggested at this point).  So, I am continuing with the anti-inflammatory diet and vitamins and still working to keep getting rid of all these hidden gluten sources, but I also do have another possible explanation for some of the issues that I'm dealing with.
