Celiac Dx For My Son, 12 Years Old

Hello, Everyone, I am new to Celiac.com. My son, 12, after1 year of vomitting and stomach aches, was finally diagnosed with Celiac disease. The symptoms stopped immediately after cutting out wheat. he is now very conscientious about not eating the wrong foods, I am very proud of him! He just hated being sick all the time. It had gotten to a point where I was about to take him to a psychiatrist because there didn't seem to be any more tests that could be done to explain his cyclical illness.

Thanks to a pediatric gastonenterologist, he was finally diagnosed with Celiac disease. I just want to let people know that children do not always have the same symptoms as other Celiac patients. My son was sick to his stomach all the time, but is a very tall boy, so his height is way above average. He also was not underwieght.

His doc told me that was one of the reasons why the diagnosis took so long. Anyway, thanks to some delicious gluten-free products, we enjoy baking cookies and muffins and pancakes. Pamela's Baking and Pancake Mix is great for these things, and delicious! I recommend buying it in 3 - 4lb bags from Amazon It only costs $36.00 for 3 bags, as opposed to $18.00 a bag from the health food store. So, all is well for my family, but I'm wondering if there are other good products out there that a young man might like.

Thanks, Bootsz

Welcome to the forum Boostsz!! You have found a wonderful resource!!!

I love Pamela's, too. It's one of the staples in my pantry.

Some of our other favourites are

Tinkyada Pasta

Pamela's bread mix

Kinnickinnik Plain Bagels (although I have a hard time finding these)

Gluten Free Pantry brownie mix (You can find them at many Wal-Marts - with the regular brownie mixes - for $3/box)

Gluten Free Pantry french bread mix - we've only used if for pizza crust

Here is an excellent list for you. It's a list of the companies that do not hide the gluten in their label so if you see a generic term such as "natural flavors" but you don't see wheat, rye, barley or oats called out, then it is not in there.

If your son has some old favourites that you are trying to find a gluten free version of, then let us know and we will point you in the right direction to a product or recipe.

Hi there, thanks for your reply! There is a WalMart near my work, I'll check it out tomorrow. Brownies are one thing that is really missed, we used to make them every week-end. Thanks also for the other info and the link, it's very helpful.

My son was sick today, after eating some potatoes that the deli said were made with corn flour, ....NOT!

Next time I'll ask to check the box myself!

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
