Could I Have Undiagnosed Celiac And Gain Weight?

Hi. I'm new here and have looked though the site. I am trying to find out if my gluten intolerance is also Celiac disease. I have previously gone on a gluten free diet, which was successful, but I've been off it for 8yrs. I now need to return to it, but I wonder if I have Celiac disease too. I was tested 10ys ago, but I had been gluten free for a couple of years at the time. My blood test came back negative. I have many of the symtems, GI distress, depression, brian fog, listed exept weight loss. In fact, in the last 5 months I have gained 40lbs. I have been overweight all my life, but this is bad. Can you have Celiac disease and gain weight?

I'm sorry if this question has been posted before. I looked but didn't find one like it. I am trying to decide if I need to find a doctor to test me for celiac disease. Or just say it doesn't matter and just go gluten free. I am lactose intolerant, and think I have soy issues as well. Any help and/or advise is welcome.

Thank you

Britt

Hi. I dont know and answer to your queston, but this may help: I am not overwieght, but was most of my life. I have not been diagnosed yet either, but feel amazing when I am gluten free. I am a person who puts on wieght easily and has to watch what they eat. I do find that I gain wieght much faster when eating gluten foods than when eating gluten free. actually, when gluten free, I feel I can eat much more and find myself getting hungry more frequently. when eating gluten I feel like I am lacking nutrients and crave food, but at the same time the food just sits in my stomach. This doesnt happen gluten free. Many of my family members have the same symptoms as me but I know they will never get tested because they are stubborn, but pretty much my whole family is overwieght. The foods my family loves are all based around gluten. I realize it more now after going to family get togetehers where there is pot-luck, there is not one thing that is gluten free....

I have talked to other people with celiacs who say they also gain wieght on gluten....I think its differant for everyone.

Yes Britt you can have coeliac and gain weight. I am one of those. For me prior to diagnosis I had a terrible time with my weight. I'm not saying by going gluten free all my weight problems have gone, far from it, but at least I have remained about the same weight since being gluten free, whereas before it was slowly creeping up.

hi, yes you can gain weight but a lot of doctors won't acknowledge this! anyway if you look on Open Original Shared Link it lists weight gain as one of the symptoms

also on these other sites:

and there is an article here https://www.celiac.com/articles/1033/1/Celi...roda/Page1.html

you cand do a search on google by putting in the key words "weight gain and celiac disease" and you will find quite a few links to look at

Hi Britt,

Before being diagnosed with Celiac I was steadily gaining weight. I always had this nagging feeling in my stomach and felt I needed to eat. I also had hypogycemia symptoms and would get what seemed like low blood sugar if I didn't eat every 2 - 3 hours.

Since going gluten free the hypoclycemia and steady weight gain is much better. I still struggle to lose weight but think it's because I still feel the need to eat more than my body needs. I guess that is more habit than anything at this point. I remember once I stopped dieting and ate whatever I wanted and as much as I wanted (pre-gluten free) and I felt better than I had in a long time. I think my body was craving nutrients so badly that it was starving even though I was over eating. And I think the Cealics that gain weight tend to have constipation more as a symptom than diarrhea. But most doctors will tell you that you don't have the typical symptoms and it can't be Celiac.

So, yes it is highly possible.

Thank you all for replying. I feel much better now. I can't afford to be tested for celiac disease, but I will definatly go gluten free.

Joni63 Collaborator

If you felt better when you were gluten free before, it can't hurt to try the diet again.

Also, if you were tested while you were gluten free the tests would have been negative after 2 years. I was only gluten free for 6 months when my bloodwork all came back negative and it was clearly positive the first time.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
