Endocrine Problems

I am having a few issues:

my hair is falling out majorly

I am having hypoglycemic fits still

I am fatigued all the time

I am cold sensitive

I have no libido

I have weight gain that I can't lose

I have been told this is all related to endocrine problems most likely.

Is anyone else having these problems? What have been some prescribed treatments?

I had all those problems and more, for me the treatment was the diet, followed very strictly and the addition of some good gluten free vitamins, the most important of those being sublingual B12. Royal Jelly from bees was also helpful for me with energy and hair.

How long have you been gluten free? With your hair loss have you checked your shampoos and such for gluten? Hair loss is pretty common for us, for some it is simply loss because we were so sick, it is common with any severe illness to lose hair in the 3 months following the illness. For others it has an autoimmune aspect and we will see loss whenever we get CC'd or a full glutening. In both cases the hair will usually grow back but it does take a while.

You also may want to have your doc do a vitamin and mineral levels on you, anemia, often see in us, can also be a factor in hair loss but you don't want to supplement iron unless you know you need to as too much is quite toxic.

I don't know how long you have been gluten-free but it does take a while to heal. Hopefully you will get to a point where you are feeling better soon.

Thyroid Test - TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and all antibodies

Ferritin & Iron tests

B12 and MMA

Vit D

Im on Armour, Vit D, B12 and I eat a ton of iron rich foods trying to avoid the supplements. I just retested Tues. and waiting for the results to see where I am with all of it. 6 weeks into the diet. No change yet.

You have classic, testbook low thyroid symptoms and yes, both adrenal and thyroid problems are very common to Celiac. I have Hashimoto's thyroid and mild adrenal insufficiencies but have them under control. It's very important for you to find a good doctor who really knows how to manage your endocrine system. One who will also go by your symptoms as part of the treatment and not just look at your TSH level. Have the full panel done and probably get your adrenals tested also because they all work together....one affects performance of the other. Once you have been tested, you can make a decision as to which thyroid hormone you want to take. There are natural ones and synthetic but both will do the trick. Good luck!

I have all those symptoms off and on, except the weight gain (I'm chronically underweight); and have just been diagnosed with Hashimoto's (already diagnosed w/celiac years ago). You got the right advice about what tests to get! Good luck.

Im like Di....underweight. Many years ago I had a doctor tell me that I could not possibly be hypothyroid because I was thin and not constipated. Idiot. Sometimes you have to get a second opinion or a third or a fourth. I suffered for 11 years because of some really stupid doctors. So I finally just got all of the necessary tests myself (they dont cost that much), did the research, went to a new doctor armed with all of the information I needed. He Dx hypothyroid and put me on Armour. Dont give up!

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—
