Hi,

Not too long ago I asked if anyone had been to the Dixie Stampede in Myrtle Beach SC and if so how was their experience. Well my family and I went last week and it was a great experience. My husband who has celiac sprue got to enjoy a tasty chicken dinner with potatoes and a slice of pork without getting sick. The waitress there was so on top of things (Natalie) that when they sat us down I started to tell her that he needed a gluten free meal and she pulled up her sleeve to show me she knew about it and had it written on her arm. When she served each item which were all served separtely she knew what he could have and what he couldn't have. It was a Great experience, all of us enjoyed the dinner show and everyone got to eat without worrying about getting sick. This is a place I would reccomend and we will go back again.

Thanks for posting this! I am going to Myrtle next week and this would be great for the kids. Did you let them know ahead of time about needing a gluten free meal? Or did you tell them when you got there and bought the tickets? Did you eat out anywhere else while you were there?

Hi,

I bought our tickets online because we also wanted to go to Ripleys aquarium and it was a package deal. After I ordered our tickets and received my confirmation number I called the Dixie Stampede and told them I needed one gluten free meal for my husband. So when we got to Myrtle Beach we stopped at the DIxie Stampede office to pick up our tickets and I thought I'm going to see if they have it noted down on their computer and it was noted down but I wanted to be safe then sorry and considering how much the tickets cost you want to make sure no one gets sick. So I recommed you doing the same. The server (Natalie) was wonderful like I posted she had it written down on her arm so she was fully aware of it. When they serve your food she came around to each plate one at a time and put your food on it, if she wasn't sure if he could have she asked him. The only things he couldn't have were corn on the cob (because of the butter they use) their biscuit and apple turn over.

We also ate at Cheeseburger in paradise (Oh it was so good there) we ate there three times in the 8 days we were there. They have a gluten free menu, look them up on the internet and you can see what they have. www.cheeseburgerinparadise.com they have a really good bacon cheeseburger (without the bun) and fries.

Then you have Bonefish Grill and the Outback.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions just let me know.

Have a good time at Myrtle Beach

I did look up Cheeseburger in Paradise and I think that will be great. Also, we have never been there! My little Celiacs are 4 and 2 so I think the mini cheeseburgers will be great. At that age they like different and small. I dont know if we are going to do Dixie Stampede cause of the cost more than the food. Its expensive! Last year we ate at Margaritaville and I had called ahead and made sure the burger was ok. When they brought it out the waiter also brought out a gluten free menu (with buns for the burgers and all) that they were getting ready to start. Like I posted though, they dont have it this year. Guess it didnt work out. I will look up the bonefish and see where it is. We have never eaten there. We are actually staying in North Myrtle. We have a condo with a kitchen so we will probably eat in more than out. Thanks for the help. I feel better knowing I have a few nights of not cooking! lol

Hi Stef,

We also stay in North Myrtle (we stay across from Barefoot landing, at Ocean Creek resorts) they too have a kitchen in the condo, but it is nice getting to go out. I too do enough cooking at home its nice to get a break. We have only gone to Bonefish Grill once and it was last year, it was kind of fancy and expensive too. I'm sure you have been to Outback so you know what they have there. The food at Cheeseburger in paradise is really good and is very affordable and a cute place. You can even get it to go which we did one night because it was raining so bad one of us just went out to pick it up and we ate back at the condo. I also have a 2 and 4 year old and 14 and 17 year old, my husband, Jeff is the only one who has Celiac.

Let me know if you need help finding Cheeseburger in paradise, its really easy to find.

Bye

Sue

Hi Sue

I just had to tell you... my husband is Jeff too! lol. That is so funny. My children are the only two celiacs. And the oldest boy (4 1/2) is the only one that has been tested. The baby showed terrible gluten signs with very little gluten so that was that. I didnt want to put him through the testiing. My husband and I have not been tested and neither have symptoms. I think my father in law and sister in law show signs but they have not been tested either.

We stay in the north part of North Myrtle. Up near Cherry Grove. It a very quiet part of myrtle. Thats good to know that Cheeseburger does to go also. That is always handy. Eating out with a 2 year old (21 months actually) is stressful enough without having to ask 50 questions about food prep. Its just too much!!! :o

Hi Stef,

That is too funny that your husbands name is also Jeff . My husband is the only one who has been tested, no one else is showing any signs, he was tested in April 2006. Noah our 4 year old (he'll be 5 next month) and Aiden our 2 year old aren't showing any signs so I won't have them tested yet. They both seem to handle gluten just fine . We think his grandmother on his Dad's side (so his Dad's mom had it) she was never tested for it (we didn't know anything about it until 2006). But before she passed away probalby a few years before she seemed to always get sick the way my husband was.

Is your 21 month old a boy too ? I know what you mean about eating out with a 2 year old.

Sue

Yes the baby (i guess really a toddler) is a boy too. When he was right at a year he got a new teacher at daycare and she fed him gluten. After a month or so I started seeing the same signs I had seen with my older son so I had a confrence at school with his teacher, the director and the cook. The teacher didnt understand that flour was from wheat!!!! I was going to keep him gluten free till 2. But oh well.... probably wouldnt have made a difference. It is what it is.

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
