Through our local support group recently received info on website (Tastes Like Real Food) for Toro brand gluten-free mixes from Aarlsberg Foods, LLC in Norway. Has anyone heard of this brand or company or US distributor? These mixes use specially processed wheat with 20 ppm, which meets the Codex Alimentorius European standard. I know Europe is far ahead of us regarding celiac disease, but it raises lots of questions. Would appreciate input from anyone. Thanks! Jo Ann

I have bought it. I made a sponge cake from the mix for July 4th. It was a delicious cake--soft and light and not too sweet. I had no ill effects nor did my gluten-free family. I'm sure that you will hear alot on both sides of this.

I don't tolerate wheat starch and have to be very careful when in Europe. I personally have no use for products made with wheat starch because there are many completely gluten-free products that taste just as good, if not better, and don't make me ill but like trillumhunter says you'll find people on both sides.

Certain portions of Europe are somewhat more advanced in their understanding of Celiac, and in diagnosing. However, there are people all over the globe who react to 'Codex' amounts of gluten. I personally disagree with the idea of including any amount of gluten and am not willing to do anything to encourage using this method of measurement for 'safeness' for Celiacs. I'm too worried that my food supply will be threatened.

I bought some of these mixes. The sponge cake did not make me sick, but the one that was wheat bread (which is said to have been modified to remove the gluten) made me horribly sick...although they did not affect my son. I won't touch them again, though.

      That and my nutritionist also said that drinking cider is one of the worst drink choices for me, given that I have candida overgrowth.  She said the combination of the alcohol and sugar would be very likely to worsen my candida problem.  She suggested that if I drink, I go for clear vodka, either neat or with a splash of cranberry.   So in summary, I am giving ciders a rest.  Whether it's a gluten risk or sugars and yeast overgrowth, its just not worth it.

      While plain, pure tea leaves (black, green, or white) are naturally gluten-free, the issue often lies not with the tea itself but with other ingredients or processing. Many flavored teas use barley malt or other gluten-containing grains as a flavoring agent, which would be clearly listed on the ingredient label. Cross-contamination is another possibility, either in the facility where the tea is processed or, surprisingly, from the tea bag material itself—some tea bags are sealed with a wheat-based glue. Furthermore, it's important to consider that your reaction could be to other substances in tea, such as high levels of tannins, which can be hard on the stomach, or to natural histamines or other compounds that can cause a non-celiac immune response. The best way to investigate is to carefully read labels for hidden ingredients, try switching to a certified gluten-free tea brand that uses whole leaf or pyramid-style bags, and see if the reaction persists.
