Dr, called today to say they wanna retest my blood for thyroid. This past thursday had blood taken and came back over active. Endocrinologist is on my list of doctors to see. I believe I have read that celiac and hyperthyroid are related. Do to malabsorbtion. This is why I cant sleep and get up in the middle of the nite starving. I also posted about my arrythmia. this is also from hyper. Always feeling shaky and irritable. My family is finally going to be free of mom the monster.

I have a thyroid issue also due to celiac. It can indeed cause problems. In my case I developed nodules on the front of my throat right on the bridge of the thyroid gland. Not big, but there. Sort of like a big Adam's apple. I have problems sleeping now when I get glutened. If you imagine a big butterfly sitting on your Adams's apple and the wings laying down alongside your throat, that is basically the shape of the thyroid. There is a left and right lobe or wing, and a bridge of connecting tissue in front of the throat. Anyway, what I wanted to let you know is that my doctor told me that 90% of the time these nodules are non-cancerous. In my case the doctor did a biopsy with what they call fine needle aspiration. Just stuck a needle in and drew some fluid out for testing. It didn't hurt at all. My surgeon wanted to remove my thyroid but I decided to wait until I had been on the gluten-free diet for a while to see if it helped. I figure getting the thyroid out is 1 time shot so I want to be really sure it is nessecary before doing that. My thyroid nodules haven't gone away but they haven't grown either. If you can stick to the gluten-free diet I think you have a good chance of avoiding major thyroid problems.

My mother had hyperhtyroid and she had symptoms including flushed face, fast heart rate, weakness and short temper. Which was surprising because she was a very mellow person normally.

I don't think the kids will get rid of you so easily! :)

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat.       oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
