Much Mucus/water In Stool

My first post, hi guys.

I'm about a month and half into finally figuring out what was causing my non-stop diarrhea. I guess I've mis-stepped into gluten about 6x since then. I'm learning.

My question though to the forum is about mucus and watery stools. The problem is rather intense for me since I have a damaged sphincter from surgery. Today I had to rush for a bathroom 8-10x. The volume of the very low viscosity mucus was probably 3-4 cups worth distributed through the day. It's liquid enough to be hard to block with pads and mucusy enough not to be absorbed like water would be.

Does anyone know how to stop this or have a handle on how long it's going to go on? Today I fasted to see if that would make a difference. It did, it seemed double the volume! :(

Pete

I hope it doesn't last long Pete! I don't know if this will help any, but I do have a couple suggestions. You could try some probiotics. It could be your bacteria balance is off some. Have you eliminated dairy from your diet? Dairy can cause lots of GI symptoms. You could also try some fiber, I like pysillium husk powder myself, but there are probably others as good.

It sounds like you gut is trying to heal, the mucous could be a protective reaction against something. Six glutenings in 1 1/2 months is quite a few. Your gut needs tiem to heal and that means avoiding all gluten sources. It takes me about a week to get over a glutening accident. So if that were true for you, 6 times would fill your 1 1/2 months with nothing but recovery from glutenings.

I really suggest you try to simplify your diet to start out. Try making it mostly rice and veggies with some meat for protein. Forget aout bread and rolls and those other nasty things that make you sick. You can always do those with gluten-free products once you have had some time to heal. It is far easier to make sure you are gluten-free with a simple diet. Are you a cook? Could be the time to start learning if you are not. Hang in there pete, it is tough getting started but it does get better in time!

Perfect advice. :)

Seems like. I was despairing since after I figured out it was Celiac Disease I thought I was finally clear, but then I encountered the mucus issue. Looking back I guess it could have been there for a while but I wouldn't have known since the diarrhea was overwhelming enough.

Yesterday was the first day the mucus finally let up. It's still unbelievable in a way after all these years of being trapped in my apt; the thought be able to do things as simple as walking a block to the store without weighing the odds of a successful trip vs the downside of making do with a mostly empty fridge.

Thanks for the good advice. I'm seeing a dietitian Monday. A bit late since the landscape seems mostly known now but I'm curious what she has to say. I found her on www.dietitians.ca

Unlike some of the reports of encounters with nutritionists/dietitians I just had a remarkably good experience with a Registered Dietitian on Bloor West near Royal York in Toronto. Susan Fyshe, her web site is Open Original Shared Link

Pricey at $175 for a hour consult but I got my money's worth. Susan did a fair amt of prep work looking at my 3 day diet report that I had submitted and had some great suggestions on changes as well as local companies that could supply foods and supplements. She was very knowledgeable on Celiac disease. Highly recommended.

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
