Gluten, Whey + Others For Me

I have what I believe to be an interesting situation. My only physical symptom is heart palpitations.

I know I get them from Whey and Gluten (each feels distinctly different). When I eliminate both I am still left with some palpitations.

I addressed the heart palpitations directly by:

1) Stress test

2) Holter Monitor

3) Event Monitor (have one now)

4) Electro cardio gram

5) Ultra sound of the heart

6) Visited with cardiologist and electrophysiologist

7) Full thyroid test revealed optimal thyroid function

Holter showed 160 extra beat in a day. Quite normal. I know I have had upwards of 10,000 extra beats that were clearly discernible. So the holter doesn't pick up all of what happens to me. I can always feel like there is a little something squeezing my chest.

None of the cardiologists have wanted to do any kind of test for gluten intolerance etc. since I don't show the normal physical symptoms (I have an iron gut and can eat darn near anything).

My current plan of attack is to make a more controlled experiment of my diet. If there is interest I can report here results periodically.

I posted in part just to see if there are any others that have the same issue (palpitations) from certain foods. The more info out there the better I think.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
