Want Dairy-free/soy Free Butter?

Hi there!

I was just told to stay away from soy (as well as dairy & gluten) to see if soy may be an additional cause of all my "perblems". I just called Earth Balance b/c I love their "fake butter" as i call it. I asked them to please try to make a recipe w/o soy.

Apparently I was the 2nd person in 2 days to call.

The Customer Relations person said that if enough people called, they would probably develop an additional ingredient formulation.

Here is the phone number: 201-568-9300 (press 1 for customer relations). They are located just outside of Boulder, Co (a VERY alternative diet friendly city). The customer relations person also said we should send an email on their website in addition to our phone call.

If you miss a wonderful buttery spread on your gluten free pancakes, muffins, bread, etc... then PLEASE Call. I have some very lonely corn bread in the fridge which misses its fake butter spread all over it.

You may want to try Ghee. It is clarified butter and has no lactose or casien. I understand your frustration when the soy issue is added in it really makes things hard. I found ghee at my local health food store and while it is not quite the same as butter or oleo it was okay.

My allergies to casein and soy don't leave me many butter substitutes. However I use tahini on some vegies (like squash) and coconut oil (solid form) on breads and corn or other vegies I formerly used butter. I make my own cashew based mayonnaise, because I also have an egg allergy. It's challenging to find suitable, safe substitutes for condiments with casein, soy and eggs. However I prefer feeling pain free to no challenge.

For awhile I was in the same place as you, and it was frustrating. There is a recipe online for making a butter replacement from Spectrum shortening using a butter flavoring.

I hope you get enough people to call--it would be great to have a soy free option. There just isn't one out there. I did learn of a Mother's brand that is available around the time of Passover that is milk and soy free. I never found it though.

Some good suggestions here! Thanks for the ideas, I like the tahini idea thats some good stuff! Makes a good dressing base too. I have been using olive oil as a butter replacement, good but spendy and not so good on sweets.

We use Smart Beat. I think that's what it's called. It's a liquid by Smart Balance. I like it in things like mashed potatoes, but not so much on things like popcorn. It's actually a bit thicker than a liquid. Rather like ketchup in texture. You can't use it for cooking but it does lend a buttery flavor. For popcorn, I pop in coconut oil and add a bit of butter flavoring.

I used to use EArth Balance, and could tolerate soy in it, but they have reformulated and now have corn oil in it, and I cannot tolerate the corn. That has left me with Ghee (I also have casein allergy) which is good, but too pricey to use all the time.

ShayFL posted a spread recipe she makes - half coconut oil/ half olive oil. I keep it in the refrigerator (makes it a solid) and it is really quite good. Not buttery, but really nice on bread and toast. I have used it on my fake popcorn (Rice Chex) and it's good on that, too.
