Accidental Gluten Ingestion, How Long Until Villi Regrow?

i have been gluten-free for approximately a year and a half now. today i had accidental ingestion of a high amount of gluten, a waffle that was supposed to be gluten free and wasnt. my body reacted as it normally would when i used to have gluten, but this was then followed by a more violent reaction than i had experienced before. i threw up everything from breakfast within an hour and a half. because my body has not had that high an amount of gluten in it for quite some time, im wondering if all the work ive done to regrow my villi is ruined.

will an accidental ingestion like this destroy all the villi?

how long will it take me to regrow the villi i may have damaged? i have heard a month, is this correct?

and how long until i will start feeling better in the short and long term? i still feel under the weather 12 hours later, but im also wondering whether ill experience negative effects for weeks to come.

any help/info is much appreciated!

thank you

No, everything you have done has not been ruined. They do say however, sometimes the damage one glutening causes, can take 6 months to repair. Yet, that damage is nothing compared to where you were 1 1/2 yrs ago.

It was accidental, now just get back to your gluten-free lifestyle and things will get back to your normal again.

Good luck!

When people who are gluten-free are considering getting tests the recommendation is for them to consume gluten for an extended period prior to the test. The exact amount varies but it is signficiant gluten consumption daily for up to six weeks. If you need that much to be sure damage will show in a test, one waffle isn't going to destroy all of your villi. The damage is more of a slow eroding than cutting them off.

Thank you that’s really helpful, hopeful won’t have to have a biopsy.

That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?

Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.
