Benefiber

Yesterday, I received a container of Benefiber in the mail. I find it questionable. The only ingredient listed is "wheat dextrin." It states it is sugar free, sodium free, and gluten free. It states there is less than 10ppm of gluten, so it's gluten free.

I will not try it. I feel if it has one ingredient, which is a wheat product, then how can it be safe. I also react to the tiniest amount of wheat. I was just wondering if anyone does use this?

When trying to choose a fiber supplement, I went to the benefiber website. I can't remember where on the site but it does disclaim that even though the gluten is less than 10ppm they recommend that a celiac NOT use their product. It was at the bottom of one their pages, maybe the ingredient one?

Thank you Kathy. I have no idea why this was sent to me, but I have no intention of using it.

Thank you for replying.

I got the sample too and threw it out because I was annoyed that it claimed that gluten-free meant less than 10 ppm.

I just went to their website, and this is their disclaimer, also listed as their last question in the FAQ:

16. Does the new ingredient, Wheat Dextrin, have any ill effects on people who experience wheat allergies or wheat intolerance?

My doctor told me to take Benefiber and I love it. I've never had a problem with it. Anything labelled "gluten-free" should be safe enough for pretty much anyone, so I recommend it.

The really sad part about this whole Benefiber thing is that before they

reformulated it a couple of years ago, it was Gluten Free and had no

wheat starch at all. I have written and called Novartis Consumer and

told them that the new ingredients are problemic for celiacs. We now get

those samples too probably because I've written to them - see how well

they listen?

"Hi we won't use your new product due to gluten issues"

reply "Here, have a sample!"

Unfortunatlely doctors are not as up on what is safe for celiacs as would be desired. I would go with Benefibers own warning, repeated here with the important part for us in bold. There is a world of fiber out there that is safe and is easy to get, tasty to consume and has no gluten grains.

I also have RA.  I have been using Metamucil 100% Inulin fiber, Clear & Natural. They no longer make it, not a big seller.  Using Benefiber 100% dextrin.  Within two days, joints are inflammed and swollen.  I have not changed anything.  Wondering if it is the dextrin.

I feel like it is probably best to get your fiber from unpeeled fruits and vegetables. If you occasionally need an extra bit, try Miralax, which has no taste, no grit and mixes with any liquid.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
