My daughter still having problems. She has to remain on miralax or she goes right back to being constapated. Also she constantly has really green poop. Do I need to bring the green poop up to Gastro?

For my son green poop is usually a sign that his system is off so I would bring it up. When Josh's system is off, we see runny neon green poop. I think there is often a cross contanimation issue going on but sometimes I've felt like everything has been done right and we've still had green poop.

Was she checked for impaction? When my son was first diagnosed, we had to clear up an impaction before he could make any progress with diahrea/constipation issues? He had 10-12 slight diahrea bm's daily when he was impacted. He was also on miralax but we haven't needed it for 10 months.

My son was dx last December and went from a short, skinny 7 year old wearning size 5 slim to a medium to tall, somewhat pudgy 8 year old wearning size 10.

That's interesting. My son has had green poops for years. I have been asking his pediatrician about it for a long time, and I never seem to get any answers. I had him evaluated for celiac last month, and so far his blood tests are normal, but I was just diagnosed and carry DQ2, and I just know that at the very least he's gluten intolerant. I really want to start him on a gluten free diet, but we have to go back and see Dr. Fasano at University of Maryland in December for followup to see if his constipation issues have resolved with miralax. So, I want to wait and see what he suggests.

He'll be 4 next week. At his three year appointment, he weighed 30.4 lbs. In September, he weighed 31.7 lbs. When he stepped on my scale the other morning he was 32.0. He's constantly complaining about his tummy hurting. He's very short for his age. He is very moody. In addition to being green, his poops are very bulky. He also gets canker sores. I know something is going on...

In contrast, my two year old has never had green poop (except once when he was breastfeeding) and is already 29 lbs. AND he is considered to be in the 50th percentile. So he's not even a very big two year old.

I'm confused about my daughter's green poop, too. I'm glad you brought this up! She's been on a gluten-free diet for a few weeks, and we're still seeing the neon green poop. She recently had a KUB X-Ray and she definitely has stool backed up in her system. She's been on miralax on two separate occasions (a week each time), and she still has the back-up. I'm not sure what to do--what length of time has everyone else been on prescribed to take miralax??

Are you feeding your kiddos anything grape or artificial grape flavored? Grape Kool-aid and grape juice can make the poop a green color, as can some of the other artificial colors. You might try switching to Apple based products and not deep purple artificial colored items for a couple of days.

I am so glad you brought up the "grape" artificial coloring. My daughter, who has Celiac has suffered on and off with green poop for years, she is now 10. When talking to my mother-in-law a few years ago, she mentioned to me that my husband had green poop as a child after eating anything with artificial grape flavoring (jelly, jam, kool-aid, grape flavored medicine, etc...). When I asked my husband about this, who is not Celiac, he confirmed the story and said he still reacts that way to grape flavoring. I am as guilty as the next to blame every intestional reaction to gluten but could you child just be reacting to an artificial coloring? I hope you find an answer soon- Please excuse any spelling errors, I could not get my spell check to work

Welcome, @JudyLou, Your rash sounds very similar to the one I experienced.  Mine was due to a deficiency in Niacin B3, although I had deficiencies in other nutrients as well.  Celiac disease causes malabsorption of all the essential nutrients, but eating a poor diet, taking certain medications, or drinking alcohol can result in deficiency diseases outside of Celiac, too.  Symptoms can wax and wane depending on dietary intake.  I knew an alcoholic who had the "boots" of Pellagra, which would get worse when he was drinking more heavily, and improve when he was drinking less.   Niacin deficiency is called Pellagra.  Symptoms consist of dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death (the four D's).  A scaly rash on the feet and hands and arms are called the "boots" and "gloves" of Pellagra.  Darkened skin around the neck exposed to the sun is Casal's necklace.  Poor farmers with niacin deficient diets were called "red necks" because of this.    Does your rash get worse if you're in the sun?  Mine did.  Any skin exposed to the sun got blistered and scaly.  Arms, legs, neck, head.  Do you have dry, ashy skin on your feet?  The itchiness was not only from the rash, but neuropathy.   My doctors were clueless.  They didn't put all my symptoms together into the three D's.  But I did.  I'd learned about Pellagra at university.  But there weren't supposed to be deficiency diseases anymore in the developed world.  Doubtful it could be that simple, I started supplementing with Niacin and other essential nutrients.  I got better.   One of Niacinamide functions is to help stop mast cells from releasing histamine.  Your allergist gave you doxepin, an antihistamine which stops mast cells from releasing histamine.   Since you do have a Celiac gene, staying on the gluten free diet can prevent Celiac disease from being triggered again.   Interesting Reading: These case studies have pictures... This doctor is obviously under educated about Celiac Disease. Deficiencies that can cause oral thrush (Candidiasis) mouth ulcers: Thiamine B1 B12 Folate Zinc Vitamin C B2 B6 Iron Malabsorption Syndrome is often co-morbid with Celiac Disease causing multiple deficiencies of the essential vitamins and minerals.  Low or deficient  Vitamin D is almost always found in undiagnosed Celiac Disease. "Over 900 genes have been reported as regulated by vitamin D"  Possible Role of Vitamin D in Celiac Disease Onset  "The overall prevalence rate of vitamin D deficiency was 41.6%, with the highest rate seen in blacks (82.1%), followed by Hispanics (69.2%)."    Prevalence and correlates of vitamin D deficiency in US adults

I saw the thing for testing for gluten when at public places.I absolutely love but I wonder if they would come up with a bracelet or necklace that can detect gluten in the air.I would LOVE that, i know i get debilitating migraine from smelling gluten wheat what have you, all I know is when I go into places like Chevron- gluten Subway, migraine, Costco that food smell of nasty gluten- migraine and same with Walmart subway.I absolutely HATE im that sensitive, my body reacts.Sadly medical hasn't taken core issue of celiac being an issue considering glutenfree ever since 1994 and in their eyes not because they didn't diagnose me. I am and wish I wasn't. If there was a detector of gluten in the air it would make a world of difference.

Oops! @Staticgypsy, I’ll get the book! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your help, @trents and @Staticgypsy! I so appreciate your thoughts. My diet is high in foods with oxalates and I don’t notice any issues there. If eliminating gluten from my diet had changed anything I’d be happy to just keep on the gluten-free diet, but with eating gluten several times with no rash, and having a rash when I was many years into gluten-free eating (and was much more careful at that point), I’m just baffled. Many, many thanks to you both.
