Gluten Free In San Francisco?

In three weeks I'm going to San Francisco for a conference... my first dairy-free, gluten-free, corn-free trip.

I'm going to be staying at a hotel right next to Union Square. Keeping in mind that I've never been in that city before and I'm going to be dependent on public transportation, does anyone know of some good restaurants in that area? I'll eat just about anything as long as it doesn't have casein, gluten, or corn (or pork or alcohol). I love any kind of Asian food... seafood is great too.

Every time I go to California I'm so JEALOUS of the good food! :P

Thanks for any suggestions :)

Union Square area? I'll put out my feelers- i lived there for 3 years. You should have no problem between Thai and seafood and Whole Foods.

Well, public transportation can get you anywhere in SF. I never drive in the city. You must check out this place:

Open Original Shared Link Its up in the castro, and its the most amazing vietnamese food, and half their menu is gluten-free.

You can use this site: Open Original Shared Link to help you find the right transit options.

The cool thing is, almost everyone in SF "gets" gluten free. They are also usually just fine with weird orders, since everyone here eats differently in one way or another. That's the only place I can recommend specifically in the city for dinner, as I'm just there during the day for work in the Financial district and pretty much everything there closes at 3pm. There is a Chipotle on Market near 1st or 2nd that is open until 11pm though. But any of the nice restaurants around Union square should be able to accommodate if you call first.

Very nice :) My experience in the Midwest has been quite different.

I stopped eating pork products about fifteen years ago, but I still get problems with people who don't realize that ham, bacon, sausage, etc... are all PORK. It's so easy to get a salad with a few bacon bits or a little piece of ham in your scrambled-egg breakfast. The thing is... a little pork won't kill me. It's something I decided to do for spiritual purposes. However... gluten, dairy, and corn have me worried because they really make me sick. I don't want to spend my conference in the bathroom!

Anyway... Zadin's menu looks delicious :P And thanks for the transportation link.

If you have time to take BART over to Oakland- there's plenty worth checking out there too!!!!

My FAVORITE place in the city is Pacific cafe at 7000 Geary (part of the city known as Outer Richmond). It's small, the fish is DELICIOUS and fresh and they serve wine to customers waiting. I miss it!!!!

This cafe downtown also has gluten free food. I haven't tried it yet though.

If you come over to East Bay, we have Cafe Graditude in Berkeley it's pretty good. The whole menu is gluten free. There is also the Mariposa Bakery in Oakland, also gluten free.

Have a great time on your trip.

Hi! Just wanted to chime in with my experience just after Christmas in SF. We had wonderful meals at Zadin's (mentioned above, with gluten-free menu); Open Original Shared Link down in the Fisherman's Wharf area (I had contacted the kitchen and they told me just to let my server know; they were great about checking everything out); Bistro Burger on Drumm (where they just made my burger with no extra ingredients and left off the bun); and Amici's (pizza) on Lombard St. (has a laminated info sheet about how they prevent cross contamination and train staff). We also had a nice buffet meal at Whole Foods on California St. (We were staying downtown.) All in all, a great experience! Didn't want to leave...

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.
