Confusion

okay so for the past month I have missed like 2-3 weeks of school and have been to like 5 doctors who have told me that I have acid reflux. The medicine they put me on has had absolutly no effect on me. My mom heard about celiacs disease and looked up the symptoms and I had almost every one of them. My symptoms are:

Extreme fatigue

vomiting

Nausea

bruising easily

constipation and diarrhea

pale skin

aching joints

killer headaches

so I'm going to another doctor tomorrow to find more out. What do you think?

Hello and Welcome,

If you want to be tested for Celiac Disease, have your doctor order these blood tests:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

Total IgA level.

The tendency for Celiac is inherited. Do either of your parents have digestive issues or similar symptoms as you?

My daughter is 17 years old and she has been really sick lately. i was wondering if you guys thought it was celiac disease. every doctor has told us it was acid reflux

her symptoms are:

Vomiting

Nausea

Headache

Aching joints

Pain in side

Extreme fatigue

Abnormal menstrual cycle

bruising easily

pale skin

constipation and diarrhea

trouble sleeping due to pain

always cold

her stomach growls after she eats

bloating

loss of hunger

weight loss

gas

irritable

Can you help?

What diagnostic tests have been done on your daughter?

She should be tested. If you absolutely cannot find a doctor to test her, you can order a Celiac panel through an online lab like Direct Labs or Health Check USA. No doctor required. But by all means, get her tested. Find a new doctor if need be or test yourself.

Those symptoms do not sound like GERD to me. There is more going on. If she does have Celiac, you will want to know to prevent further complications and get her well.

She has had an endoscopy to check for acid reflux, an ultrasound to check her liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and pancreas. The endoscopy showed excess acid in her stomach and redness in her escophogus. The ultrasound showed no problems on anything they checked. They ran a cbc to check for anemia and it was okay. Those are the only tests they have ran so far. I have some symptoms too and so does my husband but neither of us has been tested. My mom has acid reflux, IBS, colitis, and other things.

I took my daughter off gluten and she was getting a little better. It has only been 2 1/2 weeks, but now the nausea is getting worse and she is starting to vomit again. We are going to the doctor on Thursday. If he does a blood test will celiac show up since she is gluten free now.

She is also lactose intolerant since all of this started.

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely.       hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood t...

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong. yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.
