Erythrasma - Need Advice

My 16 yr old son has been gluten-free for 3 years (presenting symptoms were neurological and they have pretty much gone away now), but apart from keratosis pilaris (which I didn't worry about that much), he has recently developed erythrasma (in his groin). He is gluten-sensitive rather than a full blown celiac.

He has been checked for diabetes (thankfully OK), but I suspect his immunity is depressed if not worn-down by the prolonged effort against gluten. I am desperately hoping to avoid antibiotics as they tend to weaken him generally, but getting quite concerned that despite tee tree oil & herbal ointments this doesn't seem to be going away. Before erythrasma, he had a fungal infection in his groin, which may have weakened his skin (after application of steroid ointment).

I am giving him vits, minerals & probiotics (approx 2 times a week now). I realise that this condition is perhaps not caused by gluten as such, but I am convinced it's a part of aftermath. He also has stretch marks (not exactly in the same area where erythrasma patches are, although this probably confirms that there is some weakness in the skin tissue.

Can anyone advise me what else I should consider please?

I had stretch marks around my hips and breasts when I developed very rapidly as a teenager. I don't think that's a sign of a weakened immune system.

But... have you considered that your son might have another food intolerance (like casein, for example)? Or maybe he's just under a lot of stress? That can really wear your immune system down. Three years should be plenty of time to heal, assuming that he doesn't cheat on the gluten-free diet. Is he having any other problems besides the skin issues?

Welcome to the group! :)

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
