Sensitivity / Celiac Recovery Time

Ok, so one more question... I've been gluten free for several months, and was feeling waaaay better. (Dx'd with IBS, but through process of elimination went gluten light, then accidentally gluten free, then re-challenge(s) seemed to point to gluten.)

Anyway, Saturday I ate some gluten filled food. Other than that incident, I have not eaten gluten that I know of in at least two months. So, now I feel bad again. I'm leaning heavily towards gluten, waiting for gene test, obviously don't want to eat it for several months for blood work. But I'm wondering, how long should a slip up like this take to be over with. I mean, it's Wednesday afternoon now, I ate gluten Saturday night and have felt pretty bad since, the same old IBS symptoms, which had pretty much been gone for a month plus.

I'm curious, because it could be that it's a normal unexplainable IBS fluctuation, or is possible that the gluten can cause me to feel badly for this long?

So, if a gluten sensitive person eats it, how long does it take to feel better?

If a celiac eats it, how long does it take to feel better, generally speaking?

From what I've gathered from the IBS folks, if it is problem with just too much starch or something, the problem should be done with by now, the diet I am on has been working for months with really no issues and tons of improvement, which is really amazing considering how much medicine I was taking and that I don't have to take now. But it sucks to feel sick again. I don't want to start the whole cycle over and do blood tests for painful reasons i'll spare you, so I'm just trying to gather anecdotal information, and hope to draw my own conclusion, especially once the genetic testing comes back. (I hate waiting...)

Thank you all again for indulging my questions, and putting up this very helpful forum.

I'm Celiac, and it takes a full week to feel decent again. I've not made it past 2 weeks without accidentally glutening myself yet, so I don't know if I have longer after effects. I hope you feel better in the next couple of days.

Thanks, I am slowly feeling better. This is going to be quite a challenge, assuming it is the gluten that is doing it. Being off it for a while, and then every time I get sick, I can tie it directly back to eating gluten. This has happened several times, so it has to be something. I need some answers after about 10 years of this... anyway... good luck, I think I basically have to not eat anything unless I have checked and re-checked it's contents carefully.

@Scatterbrain, What supplements are you taking? I agree that the problem may be nutritional deficiencies.  It's worth talking to a dietician or nutritionist about.   Did you get a Marsh score at your diagnosis?  Was your tTg IgA level very high?  These can indicate more intestinal damage and poorer absorption of nutrients.   Are you eating processed gluten free food stuffs?  Have you looked into the Autoimmune Protocol Diet?

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can make TMJ worse.  Vitamins like B12 , Thiamine B1, and Pyridoxine B6 help relieve pain.  Half of the patients in one study were deficient in these three vitamins in one study below. Malabsorption of vitamins and minerals is common in celiac disease.  It's important to eat healthy nutrient dense diets like the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, a Paleo diet that has similarities to the Mediterranean diet mentioned in one of the studies.   Is there a link between diet and painful temporomandibular disorders? Yes.  I have had the tmj condition for 40 years. My only help was strictly following celiac and also eliminating soy.  Numerous dental visits and several professionally made bite plates  did very little to help with symptoms

Cristiana makes a good point and it's something I've pointed out at different times on the forum. Not all of our ailments as those with celiac disease are necessarily tied to it. Sometimes we need to look outside the celiac box and remember we are mortal humans just like those without celiac disease.

Also suffer badly with gluten and TMJD, cutting out gluten has been a game changer, seems to be micro amounts, much less than 20ppm.  Anyone else have issues with other food stuffs? Soy (tofu) and/or milk maybe causing TMJD flare-ups, any suggestions or ideas? --- I'm beginning to think it maybe crops that are grown or cured with glyphosphate. Oats, wheat, barley, soy, lentils, peas, chickpeas, rice, and buckwheat, almonds, apples, cherries, apricots, grapes, avocados, spinach, and pistachios.
