When Is The Anxiety Going To Go, And The Brain Fog?

After having a gluten incident with odd effects, see my post about Sami's pizza in the products section I read this thread and decided to try the B12.

Short story is I ate Sami's pizza crust which must have had gluten and I initially had great results from it. I was taking Benadryl for a cold and odd as it sounds I had zero reaction from the Sami's....then I got over my cold and stopped taking Benadryl and my gluten responses showed up.

But they were not strong, they were how they would be normally 2-3 days after the fact which was odd. I had anxiety when I woke up this morning. I don't let it bother me since I know why its happening it doesn't do a whole lot to effect things day to day.

I tried the B12 though and everything relaxed in a few hours. My mind settled out, my muscle tension went away...not sure how fast this metabolizes but I've been through this enough to know I was a good 3-4 more days away from feeling normal and tonight I feel great.

Thanks for the suggestion, be interesting to see how it effects things next time around.

B 12 is awesome! However, there are some studies indicating anti-histimanes can help calm down an immune attack. The benadryl might have been providing a "woah, slow down" to your immune system's reaction. I mentioned this in a post about getting better after being glutened. Good luck and hope you are feeling better

The sublingual B12 is basically instantly absorbed. It goes right from your mucous membranes to your bloodstream and your brain. It metabolizes very quickly. It also leaves quickly so do make sure you keep taking it for a bit.

Mr Moore, I would go on google and put in the B vitamins and read about it to be safe. I wouldn't want to give you the wrong advice, but from what I understand, it does not build up to be toxic. Check it out from an expert source. We can share our experiences, but it may not be the right thing for you always. The B's will help with your OCD, but try to be patient.

well i was mostly wondering how much for ME would be helpful, mainly since i was told it is metabolized fast, i took one 5000mcg in the morning, and another for the heck of it at night. i found this on wikipedia:

The sublingual route, in which B-12 is presumably or supposedly absorbed more directly under the tongue, has not proven to be necessary or helpful. A 2003 study found no significant difference in absorption for serum levels from oral vs. sublingual delivery of 500

Well my anxiety stress issues were usually right after having gluten and faded to a point of control 2-3 days later, totall within 7-9.

I just took 2 of the chewy ones, 500mg total in the morning. I don't know how 'good' the gummy ones are, however they were the only ones labeled clearly gluten free.

Not only has it helped my mood but even after the anxiety goes away I always feel like I have this slight tension in my head/neck muscles, that also has alleviated itself quite a bit.

Anxiety usually creeps in when your not doing anything. We've been starting our own business the past few weeks working from 5am till late and so I don't have a lot of downtime to worry about how I feel or even pay attention to it. Taking the B12 so far not only has relaxed me during the little downtime we have but I feel much better over all.

Doesn't seem like 500mg per day is going to hurt so I'll keep on taking it daily.

that isn't even a lot though, and from what i read t's water soluble so you just, you know, pee it out.

unless you mean 500mcg. in that case, 500mg i A LOT. im taking 5000mcg. when is enough enough? hmmm...

i did read up on mayoclinic.com. im a little worried though. it sounds like the body stores several YEARS worth of vitamin B12. i shoud have SOME right? how do i know this isn't all just a personality flaw, this depression and anxiety?

Just remember, the forum should not replace your MD. I do know that your symptoms can be from gluten as it affects the brain greatly. There is a lot of good information on that if you look around here and on google. I read an article called, "The Brain Grain Connection", but I can not remeber what site. Try googling that or look around this site and see if it is here. I did found out from ShayFL and other sources that you will just pee out any excess B 12, and B6 is the one you would not want to take more than 100 mg daily. Not sure about B 1. Don't worry, hang in there. How are you feeling as a whole?

Just remember if your still wondering if your crazy, your not crazy yet :)

Unfortunately you will find that the answers to what is bothering you will not come usually from trying things to make things better. Its when things improve, and then get worse you get the answers you were looking for.

I've been up and down this road a few times and in the end, it ALWAYS works out in the end.

A few years ago I took Cipro, 2 500mg tablets in a 24 hour period. It sent my life into a tailspin for nearly a year.

I've put bits and pieces together but I know it wasn't exactly the Cipro that caused it but made a problem I had even worse. I've had Celiacs for best of what I can figure is eight years now. I was younger back then, 27, and I just thought I was eating crappy foods since my reactions were inconsistent. Then the anxiety started and a bunch of other ailments. I went up and down. Especially went down in the winter and I'm a firm believer in sunlight.

2 winters ago I was down, last winter was fantastic but I was splitting my time between two offices and driving mid day, during the sunniest winter we've had in Michigan. This winter, back down again, but I wasn't always a big believer in sunlight but now I have a specific set of situations to contrast against one another.

Now that I've just gone through this past week with the Sami's Pizza Dough I have another piece to the puzzle. For the longest time I thought the Cipro did me in but now what I believe is my intestines were already damaged, the Cipro pushed them over the edge. Most anti-biotics do a fair amount of "safe" damage to your intestines. They kill a lot of the things that grow in there that keep your food digesting which is why so many people get upset stomachs taking anti-biotics.

I'd still never touch the stuff again but what I ran into was chronic anxiety, panic attacks, and at the milder end what I thought was ET, or Essential Tremor. Basically a shaking of the hands. It would come and go...come and go...then it went away when I went gluten free all together.

It would however come back when I worked out...as my weight dropped below 178 the problem started again. When my weight was over 178 I was fine. After reading on B12 I find its a building block for muscle, the more muscle I built the more B12 I used leaving less for the brain and nervous system.

I always got better right after I ate too, I felt GREAT after eating and in an hour or two I was back down.

Thats how I feel now but I'm just a week out of having the Sami's which considering how my stomach feels I must have gotten quite a dose, usually my stomach issues go away in a day or so. When I took the B12 the other night it was like eating, I felt fantastic but the effects lasted longer.

So now I surmise that my body was not effectively absorbing B12, which seems to be a side effect of damaged intestines from Gluten. Thats why my shaking went away and I was so up and down because following the Cipro I actually ate quite a bit of wheat as I found a low GI index diet greatly helped. I ate tons of whole wheat pasta with no ill side effects stomach wise.

I think I finally have my answer as to the whole picture...I might take the B12 4-5 times per day for the next week until my innards heal all the way. I cannot believe how fantastic I feel and even when I'm better I think I might still take it in smaller doses.

The funny thing is as winter rolled around we decided to start our own business which means cutting some costs. No more shrimp, a lot less steak, no Sushi, etc...all things high in B12. I went more towards food lower in B12.

I've also learned you can't go exactly by what you read, what effects me will effect you differently. There are answers in everything you read but you have to apply it to yourself and your situation.

There are people who have gone plain crazy after taking Cipro. This sounds so strange to type today but I had called the University of Michigan Psychiatric Hospital three nights after taking Cipro. I was in a state of such sheer panic that I can't image it today. I literally paced around my house for hours on end.

I decided at that point either I'm going to climb out of this or I'll end up falling down like the rest of them and not getting back up.

I really have considered if anyone ever looked at people who have serious issues with Cipro if they also have Celiacs or some kind of other intestinal problem that stops the absorption of proper nutrients.

What happens to me today is nothing compared to back then. I've been through the cycle enough that I know the routine and although it kicks around in my head its 10 percent of the intensity but I just brush it off until it improves.

What was shocking to me is I had a decent amount of anxiety, took that B12 and it was gone. I sat around for 6 months waiting for that to happen after taking Cipro. My healing took so long because I was setting myself back with gluten.

Before diner tonight, a nice NY Strip, my hands had a decent shake to them...afterward rock solid. I tested it with the B12 today too, same result.

The sad thing is, I was sick and a lot of us on here are sick because when I walk into my doctors office to relay this information, and I have logs, food logs, mood logs, range of motion logs(had a lot of hand problems years ago), etc...they just blow it off.

Lastly, don't look for the quick fix. Even with the B12 I have some odd ups and downs, good or bad for you the body needs to adjust, things that help you might make you feel worse before they make you feel better.

Good Luck.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
    • trents
Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.
