Artificial And Natural Flavors

My daughter was recently dx celiac disease. He told me I'd find everything I need to knwo on the internet.

Some places I have read say no artifical flavors and some say artifical flavors are okay? Which is it?

I've seen the same conflicting information for Natural flavoring too.

And what about food that has no gluten ingrediants, but was manufactured in place that manufactures wheat?

I can't remember ever finding an artificial color or flavor that has gluten.

Natural flavor is safer than it was because wheat has to be listed now, but I assume there's still some small chance of a natural flavor containing barley in particular. I don't know of any off-hand.

As for food from non-dedicated facilities, it's really your call. As you read more you'll hear of manufacturers who seem to be careful and others who aren't. Also, certain types of food, such as cereals, snacks and flours, are tougher to keep uncontaminated. I use various foods from non-dedicated facilities.

Though artificial colors and flavors may be gluten-free, many (even non-celiacs) report having reactions to them. So, it is something to keep in mind, especially for those occasions when a symptom comes out of the blue.

Some have reactions to things which are made in facilities along with wheat products, so you'll need to be mindful of that. After a few accidental glutenings, you'll start to see patterns, and pick up on the culprits.

All FDA products are require to list wheat, and cannot hide them in anything, including "flavorings." This leaves rye/barley/oats.

There are companies that have policies of not hiding gluten and fully disclosing all gluten sources, so that you don't have to worry about flavorings. If you don't see wheat/rye/barley/oats, then it does not have it hidden (according to their policy)

I have read some posts here and there about vanilla extract and artificial vanilla flavouring, and am I little confused about what I am supposed to be concerned about. So far as I know I have never had any problem with vanilla--I use the extract, not the flavouring. Can anyone explain in simple terms?

The labeling laws for listing wheat on the food label are mandated by the U.S. FDA. In New Zealand, different rules may apply.

I have never heard of issues with vanilla extract.

Well, there are different reason why a person may have to avoid vanilla. Some can't have the alcohol used in the extracts, and artificial vanilla (especially from Mexico) can contain a toxic substance called Open Original Shared Link. If the vanilla extract is all-natural, it is likely to be made with vodka. Since vodka is made from potatoes, someone who can't tolerate potatoes or nightshades might react to it. The powdered extracts can contain dextrose, commonly made from corn.

As far as I know, most people don't have a problem with vanilla extract. Many on this board recommend McCormick for spices and extracts, as they are good about labeling (last I knew, all their spices are gluten-free). McCormick uses synthetic alcohol, but they didn't tell me what it's made from.

      Hello still dancing around my celiac disease and not getting medically backed up considering Ive been glutenfree since 1994.All my ailments are the core issue of my ghost disease aka celiac disease. Im angery because the "celiac specialist " basically lightly dismissed me.Im extremely angery and fighting for a new primary care physician which is hard to do in Northern Cali.So currently without and looking.Im angery that its lightly taken when its extremely serious to the one who has it.My only evidence is a brochure back in the days when I got news letters when I lived at my parents.It was published in 1998.I was diagnosed before any foods eliminated from my diet. Angery doctors don't take seriously when Im clearly speaking.I did write to the medicine of congress and have case number.

      I totally get this. It's absolutely a grieving process, and it's okay to feel gutted about the loss of those simple joys, especially at 18. Your feelings are completely valid—it's not about being ungrateful for your amazing boyfriend, it's about mourning the life you thought you'd have. That "tortured by the smell" feeling is so real. It does get easier, I promise, but it's okay to sit in the sadness and just vent about how much it stings right now. Thanks for sharing that.       Many of us with celiac find that the fillers in medications can cause a reaction, and sometimes our bodies just process things weirdly. That "rebound muscle pain" and "burning feet" you described sounds awful and is a huge red flag. It's frustrating enough managing the diet without medication causing setbacks. So sorry you're dealing with this, but you're definitely on the right track by connecting the dots. You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

      It's so tough when you're doing everything right and still get hit with it. I'm glad you're figuring out a system that works for you—the peppermint tea and rehydration powders are smart moves. It sounds like you've really learned to listen to your body, and that's half the battle. Sticking to simple, safe food at home is the best way to build yourself back up.
