Hi! I have had Celiac Disease for almost a year now, and I just recently found out that I have Candida. My Doctor prescribed Fluconazole for me (which is the generic for Diflucan). I keep reading about all the side effects, and now I am scared to take it. I already have so many issues with the Celiac Disease and other food allergies. It is rare for me to have a day where I feel good. Also, whenever, I take a new medicine, I seem to have all these crazy reactions. I don't even like telling people when I feel sick anymore because I feel like they are tired of hearing about it. It is causing me to become so much of a loner!! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any advice about the Fluconazole. Thanks!

oil of oregano, coconut oil, garlic and pau d'arco are the best natural antifungals, with absolutely no side effects. the diet that Bee suggests is the ONLY one that is working. I've been struggling with candida for the last 5 months, and all I did was keep losing my time and my money (over 1.200 dollars in medicine and useless supplements that did nothing but make my immune go to sleep).

I am on week 4 of Bee's program, no money spent, just coconut oil and the proper diet and I am doing just Great! Please read the files and subscribe to the group. you will get the best help ever. To play devil's advocate here.....I have been on very short courses of DiFlucan years past for systemic candida problems and tolerated it very well. Yes, it can have nasty side effects but I was on it when I had full blown, undiagnosed Celiac and it helped me. It is amazing at killing off candida and my doctor prescribed it for me when I was on the diet about a month and went into "candida die off" stage. The symptoms intensify when it starts to dump into your blood stream and you get sicker. It helped enormously.

How long are you to take it? I was only on it for 1 week so it wasn't so long that I would have had problems.

The oil of oregano is horrible...sorry but every time I burped all I could taste was oregano...strong oregano! There are some great, natural anti-fungals but when you hit certain stages of treatment, the Diflucan is like a nuclear bomb to candida! :P

The problem with drug-based antifungals is that they only tend to work as a short-term fix. Unless you change the environment within the body that contributes to the growth of the Candida etc., it will likely just keep coming back.

It is a natural part of gut flora and when under control is generally harmless or may even be beneficial - it is when it gets out of control that it becomes a problem.

We can change the body environment for the bad or for the good - it depends on the type of diet we follow. Generally a higher carb/sugar (particularly processed) diet will encourage the pathogenic microbes.

Some also find that whilst the first course of drug-based treatment seems to work ok, the next may not be as successful and the further down the line you go, the more resistant the microbes become to the drug (same problem with antibiotics, as the Medical Profession is now realising).

Natural products and foods generally don't seem to have that problem and can be more successful in the long-term, but the most important facet is to deprive the pathogens of their food source and they will then have no choice but to die back.

Probiotic support can also be very helpful in helping to get the yeasts under control.

I admit I know very little regarding the details of this - but I was wondering if you could do a strong course of difflucan and then follow it with a strict anti candida/scd diet, with masses of live homemade yoghurt. Maybe I'm looking for an easy fix? (answer:yes of course!) but could this work in theory?

Actually that would be helpful when taking any antibiotic. The only thing different that I do is I start with the yogurt the day before I begin taking any antibiotic and continue with it for a few days after. I have only needed an antibiotic a few times since I was diagnosed but that seemed to help prevent the antibiotic caused D very well.

Thanks for all the advice. I still don't know what I am going to do for sure. The problem is that I do have a diet that tends to be high in sugar. I eat a big bowl of Gluten free corn flakes with tons of fruit in it every morning. I love it!! I have never liked things like: bacon, sausage, or eggs. I have ALWAYS been a big bowl of cereal type of girl. I also love to have some type of alcoholic beverage (in moderation) with my dinner a few nights a week, and from what I understand, alcohol is not good for candida. I have never taken probiotics because every time I try them, I feel really bloated. Also, I can't tolerate milk, so I don't do yogurt. I guess I will have to get it figured it because I want to feel better. Thanks!

Diflucan was developed specifically for yeast and fungal problems so I doubt it would damage your gut flora as it is designed to kill off those that are. As for it being a short term fix, it is not. Any systemic candida issue must be treated with the diet designed to rid the body of candida PLUS the use of antifungals, which will kill off the yeast as it "dies off" from starvation (which the diet will do) and dumps into your blood stream. You cannot just go on a candida treatment diet and expect it to take care of the problem.

I was on the diet for 1 year and took Nystatin on a daily basis, plus took DiFlucan in the beginning when my symptoms got a lot worse due to the "die off" stage.

I was eating only 200 grams of carbs per day but it all worked fantastic. However, years later, the symptoms returned only it was Celiac Disease that was the problem. I always take a good probiotic every day and since going gluten-free, I have had zero issues with yeast. I also do not deprive myself of dessert but eat far less than most people do. Everything in moderation.

Candida can be rid of but it takes patience and following the diet for at least 1 year, plus the aggressive use of anti fungals. It DOES work! I would not hesitate to use DiFlucan but I would not use it for longer than 2 weeks. It actually should only be used as I have stated....as an emergency use for the worst parts of the "die off" stage of treatment. It's an added kick in the pants!

Lexi....I know it is very hard to give up foods that make you feel good BUT we tend to crave what is bad for us, especially if there is a candida problem. I was a carboholic when I started the diet and I went through hell for 2 weeks while I was withdrawing from sugar. I ate only whole grains but that doesn't make a difference to candida. Going gluten free was so easy compared to the candida diet but I felt so massively better after a couple of months, it was all well worth the effort. The only fruit I ate for months were under ripe bananas....before the sugar content got too high.

You are craving cereal so the yeast overgrowth in your body is loving that! I hate to say this but no alcohol at all for the duration....it's pure sugar. I know, I would be BS if I had to give up my wine at dinner....I always thought it great wine is gluten-free! :P You are going to have to decide how important this is to you and how much you want to feel better. Nothing good gained is ever easy but you can do this. Good luck to you!

Because I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune of the thyroid) I have MAJOR (and I mean MAJOR) problems with Candida overgrowth. I have been on an anti-Candida diet for about a year and one month and it has helped a bit, but not so much overall. I follow these rules: no dairy, no sugar (includes natural ones), nothing fermented, nothing aged, no chemicals/nothing processed. Some people also eliminate nuts/seeds and starches. At one point, I was taking so many herbal extracts but they didn't help me at all (meaning, all the extracts that are known to fight Candida). Boo.

I tried going on a Nystatin in June this year and it did NOTHING at all for me. Candida is so aggressive and I think I probably hate it more than any other human being on the planet. ;) I'm going to the doctor this week, actually, and am considering asking him for another Nystatin now that I have been anti-Candida for one year and now gluten-free for about two and a half months. (Gluten and Candida often go hand in hand and work together.)

However, I advocate natural healing methods as much as possible. So here are some things you can do:

1. take a probiotic (they're the friendly bacteria that naturally occur in the body that will help fight the Candida). Go to the healthfood store and get a probiotic that has several strains of instestinal bacteria (not just one that contains Acidophilus).

2. if you can't eat yogurt because it is dairy, you can buy soygurt which contains the probiotics without the dairy. Or, there are alternative products at many healthfood stores which contain good intestinal bacteria, such as non-vinegared sauerkraut (just cabbage and salt and lemon juice). Or, you can go one step further and make your own non-dairy drink. If you use rice milk or soymilk, simply open up and mix in one or two probiotic capsule contents and allow to sit in the fridge overnight. Voila. -- your own dairy-free probiotic.

3. eat as many raw veggies as humanly possible. They provide pure cellular energy and nutrients to get your immune system strong enough to fight the Candida. To take this one step further, buy a juicer and start making your own vegetable juices. Juices are ideal for the body because they supply nutrients and energy but they don't require the same digestion as if you were simply to eat the vegetable so your body doesn't have to waste energy to break down the food.

If I have any more luck with fighting off the Candida, I'll let you know. Fighting this stuff has really been so tough and it hurts to see all these people with success stories when I've been doing right by my diet for a year with no luck. :( I just have to trust that one day, my body will get strong enough to fend for itself, stop attacking it's own cells, and get me well again. :unsure:

Hi Meline. I have been mulling over whether or not to write to you about this and finally decided :lol: ..

I did check out the site you mentioned, wow, a lot of information. It's great to know that you are doing well.

My official dx is no (had a negative blood test) celiac, but i do have the wheat allergy - after ingesting it i get stuffed up, sneeze, there are eczema like spots on my face- pink that appear and around my nostrils raw patches come up. After I stop eating wheat, there is what i call sludge coming up in my throat (perhaps my body's way to trying to detox..?)

I did come up positive for low ferritin 15, a semi low vitamin D 59, my mean platelet volume is a little elevated at 11.4, also I have the cytomagalovirus CMV and I have epstein barr virus. I have had Fibromyalgia for 5+ years , lots of history of depression, anxiety, PTSD, headaches since 11, tinnutis since 13, now I am seeing my hair is not growing properly in front (I actually can see my scalp a bit and my eye lashes are thinning out,and nails are very brittle) I apologize this is so long..

I did the candida quesionnaire and i have many of the symptoms, it makes sense that i may have candida. I get so TIRED of daily waking up tired and in pain, its easy to loose hope. When I read your statement on your profile 'I am so happy' it gives me some hope that there may be a light at this tunnel !!

The candida diet seems very restricting, I also cannot afford organic, and have a child to consider when I make meals...(Cats also have halth issues :blink: another thread..!!)

What has been most helpful to you Meline in this diet from Bee? Any advice would be so very appreciated.

      So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

      thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

      Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

      after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you

      The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
