Salt Substitute

Morton has a Salt Substitute (for salt free diets).

It looks like a salt container but all blue and says Morton Salt Substitute on it. The Nutrition Facts on the back is for a Serving Size 1/4tsp and the only thing listed with any amount is the Potassium 610mg.

Has anyone used this?

If you haven't used this product but sub out your salt what do you use?

I use a spice mix from Costco. I think Mrs Dash is gluten-free also.

I end up using the spice mix and sea salt. I think it adds complexity to the flavors.

For baked goods with yeast, salt is in there not just for flavor but as an important part of the chemistry. Salt inhibits yeast growth and sugar feeds it. The ratio is important. In most other uses it is optional and flexible. Even in baked goods(that don't have yeast). We got used to more simply flavored/seasoned foods. I used to sometimes back off on the sugar a bit when I backed off on the salt to balance the flavor. For seasoning, I've been experimenting with various ones because I need sugar-free but they also happen to be salt-free. Costco has a Rustic Tuscan Seasoning that is good on roasted chicken breasts. Trader Joes makes a Lemon Pepper mix in a grinder that is nice on fish, but I still use a little sea-salt. TJ's also makes a Seafood Grill and Broil that is good on shrimp.

The salt substitute is probably potassium chloride. I have some for use as a potassium supplement, which I was hoping to sprinkle on food. However, it tastes sooooo icky, I can't use it that way, unless in very small amounts. I find potassium gluconate to be very neutral in flavor, so I'd recommend that instead.

But do be careful when lowering your salt intake. Sodium is vital, and allowing it to become deficient is very dangerous. If you have blood pressure considerations, there are other things which don't carry such risks, that you may find helpful. For instance, increasing potassium instead of lowering salt intake can help.

RiceGuy -- Thank you for the links I will take a look at them this week. Thank you also for the comment on increasing potassium instead of decreasing salt.

      As a life.long celiac, I understand this.  I simply ask that the medical profession stop disregarding the fact that it should remain a concern for some. It cost me a lot of medical discomforts.

      @dmallbee, about 8% of celiacs react to the oat protein avenin like they do to the wheat protein gluten. In addition, there are some cultivars of oats that apparently do actually contain gluten.

      I was diagnosed at 18 months old with celiac and lived without wheat, rye, oats, and barley as instructed by my doctor, Dr. Katz at Boston Children's Hospital in the 60's and 70's. I don't agree nor recommend doctors removing oats from restriction, certified gluten-free or not.  I have eaten certified gluten free oats and have had the usual reactions to gluten.  Please reconsider this with newly diagnosed patients.
