Question For Sensitive Celiacs

Do any of you who are extremely sensitive use special brands for flours / are there brands that you trust more than others? My daughter (almost 8 years old) is so sensitive to gluten that the 10ppm is registering on her bloodwork (or so I assume - we are gluten free and my other daughter's bloodwork came back fine). She does not cheat on her diet and follows all of the rules. She does not want to feel the way that she does. They call her a sensitive celiac. I am cutting back on most things now that I question (like items in shared facilities). Curious about flour and if some brands are better for you guys than others. I was told to watch out for items made in same facilities as wheat. Thanks for any input. Oh - she is limited to rice, tapioca, potato, quinoa and amaranth flours.

I have been using that controversial EZ gluten test. I was unable to find uncontaminated amaranth.(Gluten undetectable, it was uner 20 ppm for nonsensitives) That might be your problem. Kinniknnick has flours too. I have been getting the whole grain and grinding it myself using a coffee grinder, except for cornmeal which fried my grinder. That way I can be sure that it isn't contaminated. Feeling this much better has been well worth the extra time it takes to grind it myself. That was it is fresh too. Birkett mills has flour and pancake mix. The Teff co. also has flour, so does the twin valley mills.

Watch out for possible contamination at school, Maybe she isn't super sensitive after all. in the lunchroom my son uses his own tray to help prevent contamination from dirty tables. Watch out for snacks in the classroom and some school and art supplies. Also nail biting after getting gluten on hands. At school it is on doorknobs etc. Donut parties, pizza parties. It gets everywhere. Lots of hand washing is important. Best of luck.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
