Low Temperature

Hey guys,

I'm celiac 4 months, and not convinced thats my only problem. I have seem some improvments but not any drastic improvements since going gluten free. My major symtom is constipation, some weight loss, fatigue and a bunch of others. The Dr is running a bunch of tests on me and asked me to take my temperature twice daily and record.

Well the last 4 days when i get home from work my temperature is any where between 94.5-95.5. which is about 3 degrees too cold. I am not coming in from a cold enviornment and yes-- i do feel cold. In the morning it will be up to around 98 degrees, which is also kinds of concerning that there is such a large spred between morning and night (typically your body temp doesnt change more than a degree throughout the day). He is checking my thyroid, and adrenal galds-- anything else you can think of that might be causing this and also has constipation as a symptom?

BTW- the thermometer is new, and reads normal when other people use it :-)

I think your doctor is on the right track checking your thyroid and adrenal glands. Congratulations on finding one who seems to know what they're doing! ;)

I agree with the previous poster. For most folks the morning reading should be the lowest and that is a large difference. I hope they figure it out for you soon.

I am 45 but even as a kid my mom would have the school nurse send me home if my temperature was normal. Its funny how some would argue with her, but moms know. My thyroid went bad when I was 40. but when It was removed. Some sleep problems and depression I had been having since I was 30 went away.

Cheese blocks me up.

Hi there, a low thyroid (Hypothyroidism) can cause constipation and low body temperature. Celiac and thyroid problems often go hand in hand. So, it is good you are getting both your thyroid and your adrenal glands tested. Although, if your thyroid was low, it would not cause you to lose weight, like you mentioned, but will cause fatigue, constipation, low body temperature, feeling of being cold all the time, etc. Best of luck!

I was running temperatures lower at night than in the morning, sometimes as low as 94.9. I was put on Thyroid medication for low T3, but didn't start seeing temps that got above 97.0, until I went gluten-free. I still can't really get above 97.5 though.

Weight loss is actually a symptom of hyperthyroid though.

I had similar problems and eventually tracked it down to dairy. Along with your symptoms, I also get slightly purplish circles under my eyes plus an over-all general feeling of not feeling so great. If I stay away from dairy, the symptoms all go away.

Hi- Sorry, not sure about the temp, but if you are constipated watch if you are adding fiber to your diet. Benefiber contains wheat! We found this out with our son who has/had chronic constipation and wheat/gluten intolerance.

Good luck on figuring it out. And congrat's on finding a doctor who is willing to help solve the mystery!

Thanks for the replies guys. I was vegan when this all started so I know it cant be dairy, and am currently on the SCD which limits a lot of fiber, and starch. I am prayyyying something comes up in my test results tomorrow. Yes-- my Dr is great, if anyone is in the San Francisco area please let me know and I will recommend you.

I also agree with the thyroid thing. I had extremely low results for thyroid, and was always frozen and had that brainfog effect, major fatigue, etc. Since then I've been on Synthroid for the Hypothyroidism and it has been a big help! Let us know if you get it figured out =)

Glad to hear your Dr is checking your thyroid. I have hypothyroidism as a result of the celiac disease, and the low thyroid causes low body temps, fatigue, constipation, dry skin, spacey-ness, etc. Weight loss could be due to the celiac since weight loss is not associated with low thyroid.

If it is low thyroid work with your Dr to find the right level of synthroid... sometimes takes some tweaking to get it right.

      Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

      @KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

      thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

      Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease.
