Find Out Tomorrow About Gluten Intolerance

Tomorrow I'll call my allergy doctor to find out if I'm a celiac or not (I hope he tested me, I didn't expect gluten at the time). To be honest, I actually wish this to be true, just so my life will improve (how sad is that?). I don't know when this all started, I've been like this since I've remembered but always suspected something was wrong. So now I'm in college and I just can't focus on anything (I've always been a slow learner but such a nerd). I'm also tired all the time so this has really started to affect me (in college you can't slack off like in high school). I'm this typical goody boy who tries to do his best every time but I just can't meet the demands any more, and as I grow older people will start to expect more of me (I'm 20, male) and I do a lot of stupid mistakes at work (I'm really aware of how stupid I am) and this work is the one that actually gives a lot of room for mistakes (so I feel a bit safe for now). I also do these mistakes when talking to other people, and they probably think I'm ,,special'' or something. Okay, enough with the whining (I get really emotional at evenings, ha ha).

So I strongly believe I'm a celiac. I have most of the major symptoms and I've been off gluten for a few days with much improvements for my bowels. I always thought this was something else (ADD or something, In denial), so I was totally shocked when I found a chart that showed how many symptoms I actually had. I just discovered this website today and I read a lot of your posts. I'm really inspired by you guys (applaud), I hope this will change my life. I've always been this really stubborn guy (damn me) so I've persisted through the years without going to a doctor (even though it's really cheap in my country, denial). I thought to myself, If everything checks out fine, then that just means I'm really stupid and I'll achieve nothing in life. So that's why I'm so excited to continue gluten free diet, to use all of my potentials. Maybe the symptoms themselves keep you away from doctors, like being lazy and cranky all the time and not be interested in getting an appointment. I just can't believe how no one has mentioned this gluten intolerance to me before. I've been to two doctors before and they never even suggested something was wrong with me. I told the first one how I had a hard time hearing what people say and she said ,,it's just a lack of concentration'' like this was some typical teenager thing (maybe she was right about the concentration but I had less than low). If I were a doctor I would at least ask a couple of more question about how I was doing and so on. The next doctor gave me something for my dandruff, which went away but I didn't bother to keep buying this drug she gave me (just really gave my scalp a beating when washing it, that outta do it!). After avoiding gluten, this ,,dandruff'' or cough scalp eczema cough, went mostly away by itself (of course). This doctor never even mentioned this could be food related! I'm losing my faith in doctors fast, they are so narrow minded and never think of doing what helps the patient the most (which should be telling them to see a better doctor).

Okay, I've definitely been whining a lot (happens every time I go online) so I'll get to my point. Through time, I've always had these really weak ankles and I keep hurting them badly when tripping over. I just read from the user One More Mile that he had the same problem. Could this really be gluten related (or from malnutrition)? Also, I've been gaining poorly from the gym over the last 2 years, will this mean my overall strength will be increased? Yeah, and you could also just share your experience about what I've been talking about. Thanks guys (and ladies) for your input.

This is one place where you can 'whine' all you want. Many of us had a long hard road to diagnosis and dealt with clueless doctors so you are not alone. Do keep in mind that the blood testing and even the biopsy process can definately tell you that you have celiac but it can not definately tell you that you don't. Do make sure to stay on gluten until you are done with testing and then after all testing is done go gluten free for a bit no matter what the results. Often it is the response to the diet that is most telling.

I have a condition that causes loose tendons and ligaments and suffered many, many injuries in the dumbest ways, I even 'dislocate' when sleeping on occasion. I did find that once the inflammation from the celiac went down it seems to occur less often. Something else that helped was seeing a PT who showed me excercises to strengthen the muscles around the joints I have the most issues with, my knees and ankles, and also helped me with balance issues from gluten ataxia. Celiac of course effects the nutrients we absorb from our food so it could be impacting your abilities and growth in the gym also.

I hope you get some answers soon.

Wow, guess what. I talked to my doctor and it turns out, he tested me for wheat allergy but not gluten intolerance (OMG). He didn't find out any other allergies so I'm putting my money on gluten intolerance. Now I have to wait a month to get results. You weren't kidding when you said there was a long hard road to diagnosis.

Try to make sure he does a full celiac panel and also checks for anemia and your B12 levels while he is at it. Also even if tests come out negative be sure to try the diet after they are finished.

Looking for help sourcing gluten-free products that do not contain potato or corn derived ingredients. I have other autoimmune conditions (Psoriatic Arthritis and Sjogrens) so I’m looking for prepared foods as I have fatigue and cannot devote a lot of time to baking my own treats.

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's completely understandable to feel frustrated, stressed, and disregarded after such a long and difficult health journey. It's exhausting to constantly advocate for yourself, especially when you're dealing with so many symptoms and positive diagnoses like SIBO, while still feeling unwell. The fact that you have been diligently following the diet without relief is a clear sign that something else is going on, and your doctors should be investigating other causes or complications, not dismissing your very real suffering.

It is just so sad that health care in the United States has come to this.  Health insurance should be available to everyone, not just the healthy or the rich.  My heart goes out to you.  I would not hesitate to have the test and pay for it myself.  My big concern would be how you could keep the results truly private.  I am sure that ultimately, you could not.  A.I. is getting more and more pervasive, and all data is available somewhere.  I don't know if you could give a fake name, or pay for your test with cash.  I certainly would not disclose any positive results on a private insurance application.  As I understand it, for an official diagnosis, an MD needs to review your labs and make the call.  If you end up in the ER, or some other situation, just request a gluten free diet, and say it is because you feel better when you don't eat gluten.      Hang in there, though.  Medicare is not that far away for you, and it will remove a lot of stress from your health care concerns.  You will even be able to "come out of the closet" about being Celiac!

Yes, I've posted a few times about two companies: Request a Test and Ulta Labs. Also, pretty much we can all request any test we want (with the possible exception of the N protein Covid test and I'm sure a couple of others) with Lab Corp (or Pixel by Lab Corp) and Quest. I much prefer Lab Corp for their professionalism, ease of service and having it together administratively, at least in DC. And just so you know, Request a Test uses Lab Corp and Quest anyway, while Ulta Labs uses only Quest. Ulta Labs is cheaper than Request a Test, but I am tired of dealing with Quest, so I don't use them so much.

PS - I think you meant this site, but I don't believe it has been updated in years: http://glutenfreedrugs.com/ so it is best to use: You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
