How Long Does This Last?

Had to leave work this morning because of being sick to my stomach (frequent trips to the bathroom). I'm a personal trainer at our local Y and I hated to leave, but I had no other option!

The last 3 days have been like this in the morning. The doc says it's a normal adjustment phase I have been gluten free for over 3 weeks.

I just want to know if anyone else had this problem when switching to gluten-free lifestyle & how long does this last?

I am getting frustrated and feeling defeated....

Sounds more to me like you accidentally got glutenized. Cross contamination? Did you eat out? Hope you feel better soon.

You do have ups and downs but that does sound like a reaction to me. What are you eating in the evening? Do you take medicines or vitamins before bed? What do you drink?

Is it possible you accidentally ate something with gluten? Although I am not very far into being gluten free, maybe since march/april I remember eating gluten by accident several times..in soy sauce, eating french fries from communal fryers, etc.

It sucks but I hope you feel better soon!

I do watch everything I eat very carefully. Last night I had homemade beans and rice with a bit of grilled chicken thigh... I do take a gluten-free multivit at night along with a probiotic. I try not to drink anything besides water at night (alright occasionally I have a glass of wine) but with my stomach problems I'm haven't lately.

My family still eats gluten and I do prepare it for them. I use different pans for my food, I was my hands if I touch gluten...

Could a reaction last for 3 days?

A reaction can last up to weeks for people.

I had gluten by accident on Saturday. Today I still have chills, headache as if I snorted acid, joint pain..and more! OY!!!!

OR you could be going through gluten withdrawal like I did. I felt horrible in the beginning. Frequent bathroom visits--it was TERRIBLE. My gastro symptoms were way worse on the gluten-free diet than they were when I used to eat gluten. And I was always very careful about cross contamination. Finally by around the 3rd month my gastro symptoms were all cleared up. Hang in there. I'm sure it'll get better. I think maybe it took me so long to heal since I suffered for 19 years before having a proper diagnosis.

QueenOfPain,

I had to respond to you. Just based on your user name, I can totally relate to you. I'm glad you're feeling better. Took me a lot time to get diagnosed and to begin getting better as well. We'll just keeping an eye out for hidden gluten. ;)

lol... yeah, I guess my name isn't too fitting anymore, though. Well, I do still suffer from the joint pain, but everything else is sooo much better. Glad to hear you're on the road to recovery, too, koolkat222!

I agree with @trents, but thank you for bringing this up here!

Hi @trents, yes I've had my levels checked in Dec 2025 which revealed vit D deficiency. I considered eggs although they only contain about 45 IU vitamin D/egg. I need 2000 IU vitamin D for maintenance as per my doctor. Although now, I likely need way more than that to treat the deficiency. My doctor has yet to advise me on dosing for deficiency. I've also considered cod liver oil, although again, if it's processed in a facility that has gluten, especially on flour form, I worried to test it, even if they have protocols in place to mitigate cross-contamination with gluten.

Welcome to celiac.com, @Jane02! Have you had your serum D levels checked for deficiency/sufficiency? What about cod liver oil? Egg yolks can also be a good source of vitamin D.

Hello, I'm very discouraged. I've been trying to find a safe vitamin mineral supplement brand for months and am tired of testing one after the other and experiencing my typical 'glutening' reactions. I'm really feeling the nutritional deficiencies set in. I'm doing the best I can to get these nutrients from my food, although it's impossible for me to intake enough vitamin D as I can't have dairy and have insufficient sun exposure in the northern hemisphere. I've tried B Complex from Country Life (certified gluten-free) - horrible reaction. I've tried Metagenics vitamin D tab (certified glute-free) - bad reaction. I've tried liquid vitamin D Thorne and D Drops - reactions were mild since I tried a drop of a drop. I understand there could be other things I'm reacting to in my diet, although my diet/intake is pretty consistent with minimal variables so I do think it's something in these supplements. I understand I could be reacting to the active ingredient vitamin/mineral itself or even the filler ingredients. I tried the vitamin D drops since the only filler ingredient is coconut oil, in some brands, which I know I can tolerate really well on its own - I cook with coconut oil frequently and have no 'glutening' reactions at all. Perhaps I'm reacting to the vitamin D itself, although I eat fatty fish every few days, an entire fillet with no 'glutening' reactions, which contains anywhere between 400-600 IU per fillet so I shouldn't be sensitive to vitamin D. All this to say, I'm desperately looking for at least a safe vitamin D supplement. Does anyone know of a safe vitamin D supplement brand? I'd love to know if there are any supplement brands that have absolutely no gluten (especially in flour form) in their facilities. I've heard of Kirkman having no grains in their facility - I may try this brand. Has anyone reacted to this brand?

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.
