Is Blood In Urine A Symptom Of Celiac?

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease very early this year. My GP said that unless my two girls (3 and 6) were exhibiting obvious signs of the disease that we shouldn't bother testing them. I felt that that seemed like a good idea.

Recently, the GP discovered blood in my eldest daughter's urine. We're being referred to a pediatrician and he's sending her for an ultra sound. It's just dawned on me that for years I have had blood in my urine and I'm wondering if it could have been due to the Celiac disease. I'm wondering if blood in urine can be a symptom, in which case I can discuss it with the Pediatrician when I see her.

While this may not be considered a 'celiac' symptom it is not uncommon for celiac to impact kidney function. This would be even more likely if protein is also found in the urinalysis.

i've never heard of the connection, but blood in the urine, especially in a child, deserves the big workup. It's not normal in an adult either, so you might need to talk to your doctor, as well.

It's not uncommon to see a low positive on the blood dipstick during a urinalysis. The dipstick picks up red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin from lysed RBCs, and myoglobin from muscle break down. My point is that many things can cause a positive blood on the dipstick, and it really may not be a big deal, especially if her other urinalysis tests are normal. When I do UA in the laboratory, probably at least 75% have some amount of red blood cells (RBCs) present. Granted, many of these people are sick, but many just have something as simple as an UTI. Do you know her other results?

Thanks for all the replys.

JennyC ~ She tested negative for bacteria and anything else that my GP tested for (I'm not sure what if anything that was). In a week she is going in for an ultra sound. I guess we'll see if they find anything. To be honest, I'm not really concerned. I will make sure that she is thoroughly checked out.

In the end it doesn't seem as this could be an indicator of Celiac.

I had same problem and it cleared up after drinking 100% cranberry juice.

      That and my nutritionist also said that drinking cider is one of the worst drink choices for me, given that I have candida overgrowth.  She said the combination of the alcohol and sugar would be very likely to worsen my candida problem.  She suggested that if I drink, I go for clear vodka, either neat or with a splash of cranberry.   So in summary, I am giving ciders a rest.  Whether it's a gluten risk or sugars and yeast overgrowth, its just not worth it.

      While plain, pure tea leaves (black, green, or white) are naturally gluten-free, the issue often lies not with the tea itself but with other ingredients or processing. Many flavored teas use barley malt or other gluten-containing grains as a flavoring agent, which would be clearly listed on the ingredient label. Cross-contamination is another possibility, either in the facility where the tea is processed or, surprisingly, from the tea bag material itself—some tea bags are sealed with a wheat-based glue. Furthermore, it's important to consider that your reaction could be to other substances in tea, such as high levels of tannins, which can be hard on the stomach, or to natural histamines or other compounds that can cause a non-celiac immune response. The best way to investigate is to carefully read labels for hidden ingredients, try switching to a certified gluten-free tea brand that uses whole leaf or pyramid-style bags, and see if the reaction persists.
