Large Bowel Movements

Just curious if anyone knows. Can large bowel movements (ie, the kind that plug the toilet every time) be a symptom? I know diarrhea/constipation but my husband brought the quantity up. My son's going through diagnosis and no one on either side of the family has ever been diagnosed so at the moment it's a guessing game who it came from (we'll be tested, just dealing with our oldest at the moment). So of course we both see signs of it in our own families.

I really don't know the answer to that but my daughter when she was small used to pass bowel movements like that...

We were perplexed, but her Pediatrician never seemed concerned. Now my sister her Aunt was diagnosed with

Celiac and I have gone Gluten Free due to symptoms of chronic constipation...

I have ordered testing from Enterolabs, after testing negative for Celiac through traditional blood Celiac Panels.

Well, evidently my husbands mother used to plug up the toilet "as much as her sons" for years and then she was diagnosed with Celiac years later. Unfortunately my husbands best friend is the plunger, but thus far his Celiac tests have been negative. I think he is gluten intolerant though; he bloats up like Santa Claus after he eats pasta, bread, etc.

One of my daughters also used to pass big bm's until she went gluten free in June.

I think you meant he was the plugger, but your slip of the fingers has given the best laugh I have had in a long time.

Back on topic, the guy should get tested as his symptoms do sound like he could be one of us.

      Welcome @Trish G to the forum. Hard or lumpy stools and infrequent bowel movements. My brother likes Phillips Stool Softener, Ducolate Sodium. Just a question. Was the benefiber helping?

      ttg iga high (646 mg/dl) other results are normal

      I think you may be correct. The way the results are printed makes it appear as though it’s the ttg iga but I think you’re right—the 646 is total iga. So this would be indicative of another issue (another autoimmune condition, infection, cancer, etc.) and my doctor would need to do further testing. Thank you for saying this!

      Are you sure that is the TTG IgA? Based on the units (mg/dL) and having an upper limit to the normal range, it looks like a total IgA result.

      Vegetarians and vegans with celiac disease

      I am wondering if there are any vegetarians or vegans on this forum. I’ve been vegan for 15+ years and am just finding out I likely have celiac disease (blood panel done, need biopsy). My favorite foods—outside of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds—I will likely have to give up. Anyone else?

      Welcome to the forum, @Trish G! "Gluten free" does not necessarily equate to "no gluten". According to FDA standards it actually means that a food product contains no more than 20ppm of gluten. This is safe for most celiacs but would not be for those who are on the more sensitive end of the spectrum. So, it would depend on the individual celiac and their...

This is safe for most celiacs but would not be for those who are on the more sensitive end of the spectrum. So, it would depend on the individual celiac and their level of sensitivity to minor amounts of gluten. That's the long and nuanced answer. The short answer is that it is a product derived from wheat and so you can be certain it will contain some residual amounts of gluten. No gluten removal process is 100% effective. So, to be absolutely certain, stay away from it. Have you tried chia seeds? Very high in fiber and quickly turns into a gel when added to water. Make sure you get seeds that are gluten free if you decide to try it.
